Vitamin C Serums for Your Skin

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a powerhouse ingredient, and we think it should be a staple ingredient in just about every skincare routine.  It's great for all ages, and all skin types.

What does Vitamin C do for skin?

Vitamin C Skin Benfits:

  • Vitamin C is an antioxidant and helps prevent environmental damage
  • Brightens skin by inhibiting melanin production
  • Increases collagen production
  • Speeds healing if you have acne
  • Can help boost the protection of sunblocks

Most vitamin C serums on the market are made with l-ascorbic acid.  We’ve chosen to use magnesium ascorbyl phosphate.  Why?

It’s the pH.  Ascorbic acid serums need to be formulated at a pH of 3.5 in order to be effective.  That’s low.  Too low to wear during the day if you’re prone to redness, or if you have sensitive skin. The acidity of l-ascorbic acid also makes it incompatable with with other ingredients like peptides, retinols, and for some people niacinamide.

It’s also very unstable, and goes bad quickly unless it’s combined with other ingredients like ferulic acid to keep it potent for more than a few days.

So we’ve chosen to work with magnesium ascorbyl phosphate.  A gentler, more stable, but still effective form of vitamin C.  You can use it with pretty much any other anti-aging or anti-acne ingredient, and still get all of the benefits.  We use it at 3% in most of our serums- in our testing that was the “sweet spot” where it produced great results with the least risk of irritation.

We've been using magnesium ascorbyl phosphate in our vitamin C serums for over 10 years.  It gives people fantastic results, and fits into pretty much any skin care routine.

It always comes down to the “sister test” for me.  What do I want to hand to my sister, or best friend?  Why would I give her something with a pH of 3.5 that’s going to turn her skin red when there’s another ingredient that does the same thing with much less irritation?  That’s why we use magnesium ascorbyl phosphate instead of ascorbic acid.

What is the best vitamin C serum for my skin?
