Shower Filters Rock!

Post by karen » Mon Mar 09, 2009 12:02 pm

The water here at the new house is HARD- it generally is in the area, but it's particularly bad here. After about a week my skin, hair and everything else was just bone dry- itchy, tight- just awful. So when we went to replace the shower head we grabbed a Sprite filtering shower head at Lowes for about the same price as a regular shower head. It's amazing! I didn't have high hopes for it, but I'm completely impressed. No more dry hair and itchy skin!

Completely agree! I have just recently replaced my showerhead with a filtering one, and what a difference! No more itchy skin, and I believe it's letting me shampoo my hair less often too.

This has been on my wish list for quite some time. We all have such skin issues. I ma having a little trouble convincing DH. Maybe I will have to take matters into my own hands and purchase and install them myself. I did it with ceiling fans in the upstairs bedrooms, and I usually do the plumming (caulking and replacing washers, etc.) in the house unless it is hired out. I can be a pretty resourceful gal when there is a need. Did you DIY? Was it difficult?

Wow Jen you're handy! Kris installed it, but I don't think it was bad at all- just a screw fitting with a little teflon tape (it came with it, but we keep a roll of it here). I'm pretty sure you could handle it- it seems easier than replacing washers etc.

Ooh, that sounds nice! I want to look at those when I get some $$. Thanks for the tip!

The only thing that may be a problem is getting the old head off - ours was so old and stuck, it started twisting the pipe the head was attached to when we tried to remove it. But a pair of strong hands and some huge wrench took care of it :)

I have the o-kay, I just need to research them a bit. DH likes to know all the details. How often do you generally have to change the filter?

Ours is good for 10,000 gallons- they say every 6 months or so depending on how many people are using it. There's a bunch with reviews on Amazon- I just went with the Sprite from Lowes because the original one in our house was beyond gross, and needed to go ASAP.

I was reading this thread and I turned to my friends and asked: hey what makes water hard?

"cold?"

It took me a few seconds to realise they thought "hard" as in "ice"... *groan*
