Suggestions for a one color wash shadow for deeper skintone

Post by meriT83 » Mon May 21, 2012 1:16 am

Hi there,

I wanted to know if there are any colours all you ladies would suggest would be good as an all over eye color.
I am of darker skintone, say around NC 43-44.5 in studio fix fluid and have pigmented eyelids. I am not too familiar with using eyeshadows; so wanted to try out some which would be good as a single eyelid color.

I was eyeing:
1. Spoiler( is this too green?)
2. Fusion
3. Hairpin
4. Loaded (too pink?)
5. Saddle up
6. Clutch
7. Custom

What do you think? are any of these too dark to be used as a single color ? Would really appreciate any suggestions from anyone and everyone who know more about these colors and have any other suggestions. I'm not too sure what will work for me !

I'm sure there are deeper toned ladies who might be able to tell me what they use & love as a single wash of color!

Thanks in advance!!

Spoiler is greenish-I really like it as a warm khaki on my olive skin tone, but it definitely has some olive to it that might look too green depending on your skin tone. To my eye, hairpin is a bit darker than spoiler, but it is a more neutral copper brown. Fusion is much cooler in tone than spoiler or hairpin. It's taupe with some plum to it. I can't compare any of the other colors for you, but these three are fairly similar in depth and could be used as a lid color for darker skin. If I had to guess, I would think Hairpin would look the most natural and Fusion would probably pop the most against your skin.

Thanks kchalbi. I actually had hairpin & fusion in my cart. Then i searched a bit more and got a little confused :P

Any idea about touring, model, etc?

Are there any other colours you would suggest are good as one wash colors for deeper skin tones, based on what you have tried or anything ?

Anything which is good for everyday use and not too over the top?

Hairpin would be a great color. I find it to be deeper in tone than Fusion. It's almost a little too deep for me (I'm around NC 25). What about Clutch? It's around the same depth as Hairpin and is beautiful.

Model is almost a bit too frosty for me and that's probably because its not the right tone for my skin (olive). And Touring is frosty on me too and again not the best color for my skin tone. I think both colors are good depth wise for me, just not the right tone. I also go for matte/pearl formulas. Can't do the shimmer :)

HTH!

Edited to add, I don't have the other colors on your list, so I can't speak to those.

Thanks kinjali22! I'm sure i want to get hairpin now !
Would you say clutch is too reddish?

I'm also looking for easy to wear colors which might be good for eveyday use, and maybe the 'my lids but better' kind of shade. Nothing too flashy. I guess brownish bronzy colors would suit me the best but not too orangey kind of shades. I don't know if greens or pinks would look good. I'm scared i'd end up with something too light for me. I think my pics are here in the forum someplace: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3046

What would you suggest or what are your favorites in SN for this use ?

I'm around NC 30 and usually use hairpin in the crease, but can see it being a nice lid color on darker skin. It is a very pretty neutral, not too orange. My favorite lid color is first kiss. aBut it does have an orange/pink tone. I have both Model and Touring. Touring is a very basic bronze shade. It doesn't really do much for me, but I would put it in the safe color category-very neutral. I do like to wear Model occasionally, but it's definitely pink. Propinquity is another popular midtone lid color you might like.

I would say Clutch is more bronzed than burgundy and a very neutral bronzed at that. The bronze keeps it from being too deep so it can be worn as a one color wash. And definitely not orange :). We have similar olive skin tone and I know orange is definitely not for us! Have you tried 4matic? I thinks that's closer to a my lid but better color for olive skin but it has shimmer. From looking at your pictures, hairpin might be a tad too deep but I think Clutch and Fusion would work. I havent tried Spoiler yet although I've been wanting to for a while :)

I do think Model and Touring might not be of the right tone.... It has flashes of certain colors that make it too light/wrong tone for me.

I don't know of you already have the stick em primer but it's perfect for bringing out the complexity for eyelight formula shadows (fusion, clutch, hairpin). It's worth a sample!

Let me know if you need recs for blushes or lippies. I know it's hard to find the right colors for our skin tone!

Btw, it's nice to see theres medium to tan olive skin toned ladies here!! Hi ladies!

I actually asked a similar question a few posts back and the ladies recommended Spoiler and Hairpin for me based on my skin tone (I have a medium olive/golden/yellow skin tone). I am actually wearing Spoiler right now. The experts on the forum convinced* me that I needed these colors (haha*) and I am so glad I purchased both. Based on your description, I think I am lighter skinned but these colors work great for me, so I bet they will work well for you if you are looking for a "close to your lid color but better" shade.

On me, Hairpin shows up as a nice coppery bronze and Spoiler as a slightly greenish bronze (not overly green on me at all). I have been wearing both colors in a similar way: with a creamy beige on the inner lid and one of the two colors mentioned above on the outer lid. I mix the beige and one of the two colors together to create a slightly lighter color for the crease. It's the perfect easy daytime look.

I have had a real issue getting some lighter colors to show up on my lids (I think it is my lid color plus the brushes and primer I have been using) but these are just the right depth and opacity. Other neutrals I have had great luck with are Harris and Chocolate Twinkle, but they are darker than the two previously mentioned.

I have been looking at Clutch, Touring, and Fusion as my next colors to try. If you get these, let me know how they work out for you!

Thanks ladies, all 3 of you ! I really appreciate the help.

You are right, Kinjali22...it's sooo hard to find colors that work for us; and it's great there are a few ladies here who can give a nudge in the right direction :P
i always end up gravitating towards brown shades thinking that looks the most 'safe' for our skin tones; according to me anyways :P

So far, i've narrowed it down to 4 shades to try; what do you say?

Hairpin
Spoiler
Clutch
Fusion

I'm not too sure about 4matic though. It looks pretty but im wondering if it would bee too light & too shimmery? Maybe i should hold off on it, what do you think ?

Ive been thinking of getting a primer and if im gonna order from SN, might as well get the stick em primer, right !

I have tried SN's foundation (was too hard to figure out a mix for me), 2 lippies (fig leaf & vintage) and 2 blushes (embrace & palace). The lippies are fine though i find vintage a tad too red for my taste. I think deep plums/ dark pinks/ brownish pinks look the best on me. And as for blushes, i have read that peachy/orangey shades seem to be a favorite for darker skintones but i personally don't like it too much on myself (makes me look darker, i feel). I've realized i prefer reddish/ plummish/ deep rose-pinkish shades for myself. As you can see in the pics, my lips are pretty pigmented; so lighter colors end up washing me out.

I'd really like to hear your recs for lippies and blushes, kinjali22 ! (My cart was really small & i think its gonna get bigger now :D )

Also, have any of you tried SN's retractable kabuki ? I was looking for a round top retractable kabuki and saw SN has one. So what do you say? My ecotools one has started to fall apart.

I tried 4matic at my lightest....and it was a nice my lid but better color. I actually received it as the free sample so it was perfect! I though it would have been too light as a one color wash but it really was perfect color and tone wise, but the shimmer was a bit much for me. I usually gravitate towards no shimmer colors. It's worth a try maybe later on if you're interested in trying more shadows after the first round :)

I think your list looks good! Let us know how you like the colors!

I should add that I'm a neutral olive before giving the recs below. I don't look good in overly warm or cool colors.

For blushes, I love love love Rosie. I mean love it! It's not based off dark pigments so even though it works for darker toned ladies its not dark in color. It gives a nice flush of color. I also really like Guava ( a little brighter than Rosie ) and Babydoll. For golden tones, Cider is nice :). I think pinky purples look awesome on our skin. Oh and if you want a highlighter, Flattery is gorgeous...it seems like it works on all skin colorings.

For lippies, I like colors that lighten up my lip color and Creampuff and Allure are great for that. If you want a color that's deeper, Eden is very nice and can be mixed with Allure. These 3'are my go to :). What kind of lip colors do you like? My lips behave the same way where lippies that should be that red are red red and colors can be super bright on me. The ALG formula doesn't do that for me...it's my formula of choice :)

I'm using a tinted moisturizer right now....liquids seem to work better than powders for me. I use Urban Decay Urban Defence in Bodyguard if that helps gauge my skin tone :)
