My life is never boring...

Post by superwahz » Fri Aug 13, 2010 11:34 am

The first week of August we spent down in Florida for the wedding of a good friend. The wedding was beautiful...but the trip was a total disaster! Crazy weather delays, problems with the vacation rental, instead of having time to relax and enjoy the trip we basically ran around trying to manage the chaos that ensued! DH works from home and is technically "self employed", any time off means loss of income, so that week was our "vacation" week...but felt like anything but vacation.

Thanks to all the chaos and travel delays heading back home, we had to sell our front row tickets to the Goo Goo Dolls concert! On the upside, we made 4 people very, very happy though! Especially since we sold them for face value, not many front row tickets you can pick up for $60 anymore! One guy called to thank us again after the concert and tell us how awesome it is, so that made me feel better.

By Monday night we were soooo glad to be home. Kanani did her happy doggie dance in the living room and as I went to join her I walked through a giant water puddle...when I looked up I saw water marks on the ceiling with mold growing on them...and paint melting down the walls. We rushed upstairs to see where the water was coming from to find the ceiling collapsed in DH's walk-in closet in our bedroom! Insulation was everywhere, soaked, molded, the walls of the closet were covered with mold spots, paint melting down, and a giant gaping hole in the ceiling straight through to the attic, which was where all the hot air was coming from! Knowing we couldn't safely rescue anything from his closet, we checked mine to find the ceiling sagging and mold everywhere...but thankfully we were able to rescue my smelly, damp clothes!

Turns out the "brains" that installed our new a/c unit in May didn't hook up the drainage lines properly (among other things), so all the condensation from the a/c unit was going right into the insulation and eventually seeped into the floor of the attic/ceiling of our closets. In addition to that there are other issues with it below the house, turns out someone created a big hole down there so we've been air conditioning our crawl space...and the a/c drain lines lead to the crawl space and end there, so water has been pouring into it as well! :x

We rent the house we're living in...thankfully renter's insurance is paying for us to stay elsewhere during the "drying out" phase, since the mold is a health hazard. And they'll pay to clean all the clothing in hopes nothing was permanently damaged. We're so stressed out from the past several weeks I decided we weren't gonna stay and babysit the cleaning/construction crews...that's what the property manager is for, right? ;) So we took our hotel money and instead rented a place in the mountains of NC! Close enough to get back if we need to, but far enough away hopefully we can get some peace and quiet!! DH will be working, trying to make up hours, so no vacation for the weary, but hopefully being away from all the house drama will make work more doable.

Sorry this is so long, I just had to get it out! I need some make up therapy...thankfully I have a new stash of samples I remembered to pack! I made sure my makeup was safe before leaving the house...priorities, ya know.

I hope everything is fixed properly this time, and that you both get a little rest! At least it's a bit cooler in the mountains . . . ;)

Oh goodness that sounds like a mess. Way to make lemonade though- the mountains of NC sound like fun! I hope they get it all cleaned-up for you soon- ugh.

Awww, thanks guys! I really love how supportive this forum is...and I hope they get our house sorted out soon too! But until then, I'm enjoying the cooler temps. I didn't believe the tourist blurb about it being 15 degrees cooler up here 'til we got here and I was on the deck writing an email at 1 pm and not sweating! I think daily temps are supposed to be in the high 70's-low 80's for the week...though the dog wishes the cool temps didn't come with so much rain! :P

And thanks Irina, nice to meet you too! I hated giving up those tickets, but I wanted someone to have a blast with them. If we hadn't sold them by the day of the concert, I was gonna send them to a local station to let them give them away on air. I couldn't stand the thought of 4 empty seats someone else could be enjoying! Being an optimist is hard sometimes...but I think it's worth the effort...even though I still have days I'd rather stay in bed. ;)

I understand what you are going through. We are out in Ca. years ago (about 12 years now) and get a phone call that our apartment was flooded. The washing machine in the apartment above us hose came loose while she was at work and had been flooding our place for 8 hours. We lost everything, the insurance company wouldn't cover anything b/c we didn't have flood insurance. They had to take the apartment down to the studs (very old house 1700's old, I never want to smell moldy horsehair walls again). We had to pay our rent for 2 months, but also pay to live in a hotel. It was a nightmare, thank god it is in the past!!!! Once in awhile I think of something I lost and get sad. Some how we didn't loose any family photos!!! Also our dog was with friends, had we been at work she would have been flooded!! Don't even want to think what could have happened to her.

So nice of you to sell the tickets at face value!!! Enjoy the mountains and cooler temps.

I hope everything works out!!!!

Wow, that really sucks! Hopefully it is all sorted soon, and that you can enjoy the mountain air.

JenK, that is an awful story too :( Really good ad for insurance I guess.

Oh no JenK, that sounds awful!! I'm so sorry you guys went through that! I've lost things close to my heart in various situations so I can understand how you feel. But at least we can hold the memories dear. :) We are very thankful that the damage wasn't worse than it is. Apparently the last tenants left for a week's vacation and came home to the entire first floor of the house flooded! The hot water line to the dishwasher burst... We were joking with the property manager that they'll have to put a clause in the lease for the next tenants that they can't leave on vacation for a week!

Thanks Lily! I am enjoying the mountain air! The countryside here reminds us both a lot of NZ, all the puffy tree covered hilly mountains...so DH is feeling a bit less homesick this week...and I'm biting my nails every time we go somewhere on the winding country roads! :P

As of this afternoon the drying out process isn't done, so that will push their estimated schedule back a bit. Ah well, things will get done when they get done and not a moment sooner! ;)
