Most true gray color?

Post by ChristineLynnP » Sun Jul 04, 2010 8:04 pm

I love gray eyeshadow, it pairs with so many other shades as a crease color or liner shade. But since I made the MMU switch a few years ago, I've noticed that most mineral shadows that are supposed to be gray end up looking blue-ish. Does SN have a gray through and through that doesn't rub down to blue at all? I'm interested in throwing it in with my next order.

The eyeshadows are categorised by colour so they're easy to find. I'd suggest having a look at Platinum, Carbon and Storm Cloud.

(I'd answered this last night, very sleepy, and recommended colours which were discontinued, in case anyone spotted this edit!)

That wasn't why I asked though. I realize they're categorized by color, but I can see on my screen that a lot of them still appear blue-based gray (storm cloud) or even browned-down a bit (slate)... not a true gray... that's how I wound up with 10 "gray" shadows from various companies that weren't exactly what I was looking for, although they each appeared to be on the site. It helps to know from people who have used them if they rub down to blue or not, which isn't something a description will always catch.

Have you tried Slick? doesn't blend down to blue, it has a brown/taupe grey element... May not be a true enough grey for what you're looking for. The only other one I have is Dove, which is a matte and I think would have that bluish cast on some skintones.

Slick is pretty in its own right, but yeah, too brown-based for what I'm going for. Just like Wink Wink is pretty but clearly purple-based... and Rebel looks blue-based... I'm thinking Carbon might be the best I can get. I think it's more glittery than what I was wanting, but it looks like from the swatch that the glitter kinda doesn't stick around quite so much, which is good.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone!

Well, I stand corrected. I do remember the difficulties with EDM "Silver... bells / medal / whatever" all appearing somewhat similar and I remember well the disappointment that was voiced over this by many folks. That's why I suggested these colours, knowing full well that yet another blue-ish colour would cause more disappointment.

Okay, so if you want a precisely true grey, the way to get that - with absolutely no other colour inference - is to whiten down a true black. The truest black that SN has is Coal. To that, you could add a white (perhaps Bone, an off-white / ivory), Vanilla or Cream (pearly near-whites). I don't know how well diluting it with foundation or even glow base would work. To that, adding something sparkly might help replicate the metallic element to grey.

Bear in mind also that black splits into brown and blue (remember chromatography experiments in high school chemistry class?) Without a specialist knowledge of pigment availability, it might not be possible to get a colour as specific as "true grey" without a hint of brown or blue colour to it. Good luck finding your holy grail, all the same.

most mineral shadows that are supposed to be gray end up looking blue-ish.
So it isn't just me then! Shades that aren't supposed to be grey turn grey and the greys turn blue. I thought it was just my too-warm skin and eye tones that did this. Before finding SN I bought EDM Swing Set which is a matte concrete grey - until I put it on my lids, that is, where it gradually becomes more and more blue. So weird.

I'm going to PM you, because I just re-swatched some of my other brand grays and a few are true grays, I just don't like the shimmer of them. You might though.

I recommend Slate. While it is not a true gray, it leans ever so slightly warm to combat the 'blues'. It is my go to gray.
