Summer Playlist?

Post by superwahz » Sun Jun 13, 2010 6:25 pm

I have a Zune crammed full of music and the bad habit of never making any playlists for it! Instead I end up spending too much time scrolling through music or clicking "skip" instead of enjoying the music. So I've decided to make a "Summertime" playlist, but I'm drawing a blank as to what to add to it.

I'd love for everyone to tell me what songs say "summer" for you so I can add them to my list! I have a very diverse taste in music, I'll pretty much listen to anything at least once! :D

Oh, and for those of you headed into winter right now, suggest songs too! Maybe thinking of them will make you feel a little warmer. ;)

Yes, on the OCMS! My brother was the bass player until he became a dad, and they played at my wedding waaay back when. It always reminds me of my wedding day.

We have the Grassroots festival here, and it's generally a pretty big blend of musicians. One of the bands I never miss is Keith Secola. They have some really fun songs. I also love ska- the Bosstones, Sublime, and old Red Hot Chili Peppers in the summer. My other guilty pleasure is hair metal and old-school gangster rap- Guns n' Roses, Poison, some Bon Jovi, and then NWA, Digital Underground etc.

Son of a Preacher Man- Dusty Springfield
Kiss- Prince
Sweet Home Alabama
Devil Went Down to Georgia
We Want The Funk- Parliament Funkadelic
Jump Around- House of Pain
NDN Kars- Keith Secola
Winnebago Warrior- Dead Kennedy's (we have a bunch of tourists around here- which is cool, but it's rather annoying when you're trying to get somewhere, and you're stuck behind Nancy Pelosi's motorcade because it's Cornell graduation weekend, or your tiny town of 5000 people is invaded by 150,000 NASCAR fans- the Dead Kennedy's help)
Janis Joplin can be nice and cathartic too
Old Motown- Jackson 5, Aretha Franklin, the Supremes
The Beach Boys- pretty much any of them are fun
Pretty much anything from Dookie by Greenday
The Ramones in small doses
Gin and Juice- the Gourds
One Week- Barenaked Ladies
Sugar Magnolia, Truckin', Friend of the Devil- Grateful Dead my dog Suzie loves jam bands...my sister got her hooked on Phish (Suzie Greenberg), and that chills her out in the car

And because that's a rather crazy play list- when DH is in the car we listen to lot of Henry Rollins spoken word MP3's because it's one of the few things we can agree on.

That is so very cool! :D

I love playing The Gourds version of "Gin and Juice" along with the original when I talk to students about doing a comparison/contrast paper. I of course warn them of the lyrics . . . no one has ever walked out. They get a kick out of it.

Add to the list: Matthew Sweet--most of his work is upbeat and fun. Perfect for summer!

Fun, Fun, Fun- The Beach Boys (really anything by the beach boys is summery to me)
Girls Just Want to Have Fun- Cyndi Lauper
All Summer Long- Kid Rock
Sweet Home Alabama- Alabama
Get up offa that Thang- James Brown
Dude Looks Like a Lady- Aerosmith (actually this makes me think of Mrs. Doubtfire but it's still upbeat)
Summer Nights & We Go Together- Grease
Dancing Queen- ABBA
Soak Up the Sun-Cheryl Crow
Me and Charlie Talking- Miranda Lambert
Samantha
"Are you a master of your destiny or a slave to your fear..."

Can't live without colors: Highbeam, Homecoming Queen, Sassy, & Cider

My playlists tend to be all over the place too and DH listens primarily to classical music, preferably of the Baroque era! So...we have to work that in after a while. Although, I think some of my music is growing on him! Dave Matthews Band is now "approved", probably because I have hours upon hours of their music. And....we happened to score front row tickets to The Goo Goo Dolls concert here in August!! So of course they'll be in heavy rotation this summer too. :D

I haven't heard that in a long time! Can't wait for it to randomly play while we're running errands one day, the look on DH face will be priceless! I think when one doesn't grow up surrounded by American music, songs like that sound even more off the wall than usual! ;)

I know I will be hearing lots of whatever my kids and hubby are practicing at the moment. My hubby and DS play electric guitar, and my DD recently decided to take up bass. We tend to listen to a particular song often to play it.

The song of the week is "Carry On My Wayward Son" by Kansas.
Others are:
Dead or Alive by Bon Jovi
Sweet Child of Mine by Guns n' Roses
Good Riddance by Green Day
Sunshine of Your Love by Cream
Black Magic Woman by Santana...this was the first song my DS wanted to learn at 9....
Stairway to Heaven by Led Zepplin
Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd

MY playlists usually include the Goo Goo Dolls and U2, DD likes Paramore.....
