Juicers

Post by egerandi » Sun Feb 07, 2010 8:02 pm

I'm looking to buy a smallish (centrifugal, *not* the kind that looks like a meat grinder) juicer, for only 2 people, light daily use. I've read through countless online reviews, and I almost found my choice, but I would appreciate some input from those of you already juicing :)

I would prefer pulp ejection, and not spend over $100 but I can go a little higher if needed.

Random link with a picture of my juicer. Dunno what to tell you. It's incredibly satisfying mangling the living daylights out of a whole pineapple in about 4 seconds. Also slightly menacing, but great for 'bad day at the office' stress. If you love messing about blending mineral colours, you'll take all of five seconds flat to get totally into juicing everything you can get your hands on and make juice 'cocktails' with every weird and wacky flavour possible. (Broccoli - don't do it, honestly). I've never seen a machine yet which didn't involve a bit of messy cleanup rinsing the pulp out of the component parts, but that's worth the fun, frankly. Don't store juice for more than a day - but in practice, it starts to go brown after 30 mins- 1 hour so always drink fresh. Try and make sure the cat is out of the room when you switch it on or it'll have kittens in fright from the noise - usually sounds like a jumbo jet engine starting up (as if it was inches behind you and you're half asleep and didn't know it was there). Try to remember to juice beetroot with the lid on or the splattered red juice will make your kitchen look like a crime scene for *days*.

Other than that... dig in and have fun.

Oh, yeah, I did something similar with beets before, supercool to look at :D I have no kittens, but one very skittish puppy. However, he knows when he hears the noise of the blender, that means smoothie for him, so I think I'll be fine with the juicer too. Only thing about the juice going brown is that I would need something for the morning, without having to juice in the morning, but I can totally deal with the color, just not sure if that takes away from the nutritional value, perhaps store it in a dark container with a lid in the fridge? The boyfriend and I live in a loft, with opposite lifestyles (he's a bat), and I'd rather no wake him every am with a jet engine :D

Thanks for your input, I'll look at the Breville some more. That's what's recommended in the raw food detox diet book too.

I had the same Breville juicer for a while (sold it when I moved). Bought it used. It worked surprisingly well, especially considering what it cost! It was a lot louder than the "meat grinder" type my parents have, but it was also about 1/6 the price. :P

I loved that the feed chute is so wide, definitely helps you feel motivated to juice when you don't have to chop things into tiny pieces...though I did quarter things. Clean up was pretty average. The pulp was drier than I've experienced with other lower priced juicers, which was great, since I didn't feel like I was wasting so much! Plus, I saved some of the pulp in the freezer to add when making soup stocks (like carrot, celery) and composted the rest.

I think juicing it the night before would decrease some of the benefits that comes from fresh juicing, but on the other hand, even 8-10 hours old it's a huge step up from what you'd buy in a grocery store!

Thanks, sounds like I'm gonna go with Breville then. I think I can even get a refurb on Amazon.
Good tip for the pulp, I was hoping I can use them for something!

I was forever trying to find new ways to use the pulp!

I LOVE buying things refurbished or used, I think of it as the ultimate in recycling ;) Good luck with your juicer hunting!
