Reading any good books

Post by Ghost » Fri May 30, 2008 3:33 pm

Hi all

I'm an avid reader. Actually that’s putting mildly, I read every dam minute of everyday. I read on the 10 mins bus ride to work (at 06:55), the 5 little mins at my desk before I clock in at 07:30, waiting for the bus going home at the bus stop, 10 min ride on the bus back home, as soon as I get in...................... you get the picture.

Anyway I was just wondering if there are any other avid book readers out there in SN land.

At the mo I'm reading Charlaine Harris from dead to worse - sookie stackhouse series (pg 99, its just started to get good) and I've just finished Kelley Armstrong's personal demons - women of the otherworld series, but now I gleefully awaiting the next instalment of the dark hunter series by Sherrylin Kenyon (Its the Year of Acheron baby) though I'm a little behind, I have to read dream chaser first.

My fav authors are Charlaine harris, kelley armstrong, laurell K hamilton, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Freda warrington, susan sizemore, Tanya Huff (bring blood ties back!!!!), Karen Chance, Mary Janice Davidson, Kim Harrison, Lora Leigh, Michelle Bardsley……………….. the list is endless, but I'll stop there (these are from the top of my head).

If you haven't already guessed these are all supernatural/horror/vampire books and except for one, all are either US or Canadian authors (ever feel like you're living in the wrong country lol)

So please tell us all of the books you’re reading. If you’re anything like me you'll go on forever. But please be courteous of other people and not post spoilers – it more fun not knowing.

Would I spoil anything for you, Sarah? Lil ol' me? :) Wouldn't do that! I LOVE to read & I read opposite of what you do,lol. If I'm reading for escape, I want a Dean Koontz, Robin Cook, Mary Higgins Clark page-turner ~ any of those can turn into an all-nighter. Read Odd Hours over the weekend. Other than edge-of-the-seat stuff, I go in streaks with autobiographies or biographies..& I *love* to read Ann Rule's books (accounts of crime & trials). As a kid, I read EVERY Erle Stanley Gardner "Perry Mason" book...loved reading about trials.

Ever read any Neil Gaiman? Peronally I think he's awesome.
I just finished reading 'Perfume the story of a murderer' and that was really good too. Also maybe consider the Nightwatch triology by Sergei Lukyanenko (not sure surname is spelled right), they're quite awesome.
Uhm....other than that, I mostly read sci-fi and fantasy, so can give you lots of recs in that department, if you're interested (and no, it's not just for geeks ;) )

I'm a big reader too! I majored in English for a while because I just love to read. Lately it's been a lot of business books with a couple of makeup/beauty books thrown in- but if I had to pick a genre I'd have to go with the page turners too. My absolute favorite for fun reading is anything by Janet Evanovitch- love the Stephanie Plum series, they're hilarious. Patricia Cornwell, Tom Robbins, Tom Clancy, some James Patterson, Linda Barnes, Ben Elton (Stark is my favorite of his- go figure), Dan Brown, some Bill Bryson- you name it- I'm into it. I even had a Harry Potter kick for a while- I haven't read the latest 2, but did read the series up until then. Maybe that's what I'll read this summer- but I heard that they're kind of dark, and I'm not so into dark. I read The Namesake over the weekend- I don't normally get into the "heavier" sad stories, but I picked it up at my sisters, and read it- not bad.

I find that I get into author kicks- so I read one book by someone, and then I read the rest. Ithaca has a fantastic used book sale twice a year, so I stock up then and go through them as I get a chance.

Neil Gaiman sounds familiar, but when I went to Amazon to look him up, nothing popped out at me- why do I know that name??? Am I just so geeky that it's kind of slipped into my subconscious?? College boyfriend read a lot of sci-fi type things so I read some Terry Pratchett and a few other things. He was really into Gravity's Rainbow, but I just couldn't grasp it at the time.

I've got to run-my husband just got here and we're going to dinner! I just fluffed with *all new* products. Time to test them out and see what happens!

Haven't heard of most of the authors that were listed. Raising five *active* children has keep me out of real life for a long time. A couple of years ago, I got the time and inspiritation to start reading again. When I was a teenager, someone gave me a gift of the Sherlock Holmes stories. Finally read them - 35 years later! In fact, I loved them so much that I went on Amazon and ordered almost everything that Conan Doyle wrote. The White Company is a war story, but also a romance. Quite a delightful read. Now I am reading Sir Nigel, the prequel of The White Company. Aside from Conan Doyle, I've been reading a number of other classics, and a very few more modern stories. I must say, however, that when I bought a few New York Times bestsellers, the language and content was so offensive that I actually tossed the books in the trash. And the new "life in the fast lane" genre also isn't my taste. My life is frantic enough! I want a book that is an escape into something lovely, interesting, and brilliant, not a mirror image of my own busy, stressed life!

Speaking of classics, has anyone seen the new Narnia movie? Any good?

The last two HP books are a bit darker, but don't think of them as very dark really, they're still YA material.

With Neil Gaiman, he and PTerry co-authored Good Omens (which I haven't read yet). Also he wrote the book Stardust, which came out as a movie last year (I'd recommend both book and movie, they are quite good and quite different to each other in some ways). He also has a blog which is often both informative and funny.

Would like to go and see the new Narnia movie, but it doesn't come out here till this Thursday, and Indy gets priority (even if it is as crap as some people say it is).

I finally figured it out...he wrote the companion guide to the Hitchiker's series!

Mikie is there a good Ann Rule book to start with? I love the trial stuff- I find myself "cheering" out loud during Law & Order- my husband thinks I'm a weirdo when I yell things like "Jeopardy hasn't attached yet!" or "Of course they had probable cause"- but then he argues along side me.

I forgot to mention David Sedaris! Any fans? His family makes mine seem almost normal.

I love David Sedaris too!

I'm an avid reader, have been all my life, but since I've got little ones time doesn't allow like it once did. I do have to read at least a few pages everynight before I go to sleep though. I'm not really into mysteries or dark sci/fi stuff at all. One of my favorite authors is Elizabeth Berg. Very easy to read stories that could/do happen probably everyday somewhere in the world. There are a bunch of other authors that I really like too, but I just can't think of their names atm. If I recall them I'll post again!

Did you know he's from Binghamton? His father worked at IBM in Endicott years ago!
