what makeup do you take on vacations?

Post by krenee » Sat Jun 06, 2009 9:31 am

We are leaving in 2 weeks and are going to be gone for about a week. I really don't want to overpack. As far as makeup I just want to take what I need to look nice and have a little versatility but don't want to take a ton of stuff (hubby would probably keel over if I brought 50 little jars along, LOL) What do you guys take as far as makeup when you are going away? - any specific shades or colors? It is getting into summer and I am starting to get more tan too and I wear different colors in the summer vs winter.

When I travel, I put all of my various powders into individual small ziplock bags like Karen uses for lippie samples (sold at crafts stores in the bead section) and label them. That way, they all fit easily into the zipper pouch with lippies and creme eyeliners. If you narrow down the brushes to the bare minimum, you can carry mascara in the brush section, and it all easily fits in your purse. I also carry my favorite moisturizer in a $.99 sample bottle from Walmart (after using the included moisturizer on my arms and legs and washing the bottle thoroughly). Now that Karen sells the small plastic sample bottles, you could easily carry enough serums, cleansers or other fun potions for a week. For travel, I mix my foundation to include Date Bait, a little Glow and some Zinc. I usually pack a small plastic swirly bowl for foundation and blush application. If I need to reapply mid-day, I just use Date Bait and pour a small amount onto a piece if paper to "swirl" on. Eyeshadow and eyebrow color work the same way, or if you're careful, you can just dip your brush into the baggie and tap it below the zipper part, still inside the bag.

For colors, I hate fussing on vacation, so I always pack my favorites - Elegant Brown quad, Grassroots Green, Ocean, Vineyard, Cashmere, and Crush or Frenchie for highlight. Between those and Cream, you can coordinate with anything. Mahogany or Espresso eyeliner for evening (don't usually wear it in daytime); Flirt and Carnal blush; Pure, Sweetheart and Nectar lippies. For "potions", I'd pack Aloe/Green Tea and Facelift. Waterproof brown/black mascara. Lt brown brow powder. I know that sounds like a suitcase full, but it really does fit in the zipper part of the brush case when you use the ziploc bags!

Have a great vacation, and don't forget the sunscreen.

Another thought. If you have a retractable powder brush, give it a swirl in the swirly bowl, tap, and put the cover back on. Then it will be "loaded" if you need it mid-day. They are smaller than the refillable brushes and available at most stores where you buy makeup. The refillable one that Karen offers is great to keep for home or office use, but I find it too big for my purse. The smaller retractable ones are about the size of a mascara tube and fit in the brushholder section of the SN travel brush kit.

I went to San Francisco for 5 days over the Memorial Day weekend and took the following in the SN weekend size makeup bag: sample size jar of powder foundation, sample size (GWP) of So Loverly cream blush, sample jars of Stardust Blush and Tempt Tryst finishing powder, MAC Rose Romance Beauty Powder in Blush of Youth, MAC Painterly Paint Pot and Shadestick in Wet Cement, SN Maiden, Peace and Bloom lippies and SN Solid Fragrances in Miss Coco and Petite Cherie. I also had my SS swirly bowl, tweezers and eyebrow pencil in there. It all fit fine w/out stressing the zipper!

I always bring foundation and blush (OR bronzer, if it's summer).

I also need e/s primer, but if you don't, you could skip that.

Then I bring a couple of colorful e/s (maybe 2-3) and one shimmery light "one color wash" type shadows in a NEUTRAL color. That way, I can use the shimmery e/s for highlighting or for mixing into my blush for a shimmer blush.

And mascara. I don't bring eyeliner but you definitely could if you like to wear it every day.

I bring a clear lip gloss like the black label so I can moisturize my lips without over-applying color (you know how drying airplane travel can be on the skin and lips). I like to put a small spritzer refresher spray too, like the Aubrey Organics facial mist.

Another travel essential is scented skin wipes (like the ones at Bath and Body Works) and a small alcohol-based body splash for freshening up after plane, train, etc.

And that's usually it.

The other posters gave great advise.

I would like to add that when I went on vacation for two weeks at Christmas, I had taken a bunch of sample in little baggies. It gave me something new to try and did not take a lot of space.
