How you organise your make-up

Post by Ghost » Wed Jan 21, 2009 1:59 pm

Hi all

I'm looking for a little inspiration. Last night I counted and I have 15 blushes, couple of the glow samples, around 45 lippies, 7 eye liners, 3 mascaras, 92 eyeshadows and a few other things not by SN. Well I think its time to start organising the lot and I was wonder if people had any idea or pics of how they organise their's. I popped into WH Smiths (my local stationery shop) and got a few ideas of organisers.

At the mo everything sits on my shelf, but if I had wall space I'd do what Samantha did with hers (nice by the way). Oh and Mikie I don't think the board would have enough file space for your pics of ALL your collection  but any help would be a blessing.

Thanks
Foundation: 1: baggie 6: ebony: 7 glow
Fav blush: Steller
Fav Lippie: Symphony
Fav combo: cream 1st half of lid, 09:59 2nd half, chocolate twinkle in the crease with Blackheart over it blended out and vanillia on brow bone.

Well, I pressed all my shadows and blushes and glows, so instead of the lil containers I have 5 (and growing) 15 pan palettes. I organized the shadows by colors (blushes, neutrals, blues, purples, etc), and marked that on the cover. Next step: printing labels for the inside cover as I find myself removing the pans a lot to check which color it is.

My brushes are in glass jars organized by use - face, eye - and I also use a jar for my long lip and eyeliners. For now, my lippies are in a nice black mash bag (thanks Karen!), but I need a better option.

I also keep my base application stuff (foundation, concealers, blur) in one spot, for easy access in the morning, but again, looking for a neater solution. I do have a nice big makeup case, so I'll prolly just end up laying out the stuff on its shelves.

What product do u use to press them with?

I'm thinking of buying the big 28 palette with pans and magnets from Starsmakeuphaven.com and pressing all my shadows and blushes... I'm running out of shelf space...

I used the binder from diycosmetics.com. Here is their method: http://www.diycosmetics.com/catalog/How ... -74-1.html
I actually diluted the binder 50-50 with filtered water - saw it on youtube once, but can't find that specific video any more.
I used my flat iron to bake the shadows. Experiment a bit, and you'll get the hang of it pretty fast, it's fun!
To be honest I still end up with some duds (too powdery or too creamy) and have to repeat, but all in all it's worth it.

I have a fishing tackle box for pretty much all of it...I have to flip the shadows on their side to make them fit in the drawers, but I keep them in alphabetical order so they're pretty easy to find. I do my makeup in the car pretty often, and it helps to keep it portable (we live in the sticks- so DH drives, and I finish getting ready). Blushes, foundation and finishing powder go in a drawer on my vanity normally. My lippies are completely scattered, and not at all organized, but at the shop we use votive candle holders and tiered plant stands.

I have double-tiered turntables (4, ROFL!) & really prefer them. I bought the little square jars that another mmu company sells a particular collection in. LOVE THOSE JARS so much that I bought a ton of them from a different source. Tranferred about 100 shadows into them ~ used a metallic gold pen (paint) to write the names on. They look adorable ringing each turntable & all I do is spin to choose colors. On those same turntables, I also have various foundation mixes & various finishers in 12gm shaker jars. The jars are KEY! LOVE those 2 can't-be-without styled jars. I did do a huge markerboard like Sam's but for me, I'm not keen on it. Magnets fall off the jars & presto ~ hockey pucks for furkids. I originally bought magnets at Walmart & *those* actually stick ~ then I ordered a ton from Sam's ebay supplier ~ & I found that those fail for me. Even bolstering w/all-purpose glue didn't help, & I'm sick & tired of fixing them (AGAIN) & having jars go missing. I *also* have "sewing" organizers like from Bed,Bath,& Beyond ~ they hang on the back of the door & have 64 clear pockets..2 SN jars will fit in each...& that's where I store all the lippies,LOL.

On the turntables, since I just ring the square jars along the perimeter, the center gets used differently. A large pretty (footed) mug holds a small magnifying mirror, e/l curler, & mascaras. Another holds a pretty (footed) bowl *upon which* I rest brushes to dry. Yet another holds skincare. Yet another holds a beautiful glass "seashell" that holds miriad baggies, etc.

For *me*, I find that out of sight=out of mind, & it's important to me to have a pretty visual display of colors. I have experimented a LOT in my day, hehe.

I live in the UK and bought a silver metal tool box from a DIY store called B&Q; the lid opens up to reveal 2 tiers of trays and a deep bottom section.

I have my shadows & blush in the top section (so they have good light & can seeexactly which shade I want) with my face items (foundation, concealer etc) and other bits & pieces (cream liners, brow powders etc) in the second layer, and then all of my miscellaeous stuff in the bottom (primer, EM Natural Reflections, some brushes etc).

This lives under my bed for when I have a bit more time to 'play' with things, but I also have a v small wicker basket with a lid on my bathroom counter top with mascara, foundation, clear mascara for my unruly eyebrows ;) , a couple of my fave lip glosses, foundation for my essential, everyday product.

Haven't got any pictures at the mo but will post when I take some!

I use a flat tie/belt organizer that I bought at Target in the closet organization section. Nine e/s fit in each compartment. I also use jars for taller items like eyeliner, mascara, and lip gloss.

I have a rolling plastic cart with 5 drawers in it, 2 small at the top and 3 large. The top two hold a combination of lippies, foundations and my non mineral makeup(that has been pretty well ignored since I have been addicted to SN). On top of that I have stackable office paper organizers slid in them are tin baking pans(fit perfectly) that’s where the eye shadows live, so when I need them I just pull out my colors and slide it back. On the top are my brushes kept in containers with little pebbles to keep them upright.

What kind of space do you have available for storage. I have to say, professionals use the train case so they must be pretty efficient.

And a train case is really just a glorified tackle box.

I've also seen wooden chests with LOTS of little drawers (simha and jo both have these i believe). Like a jewelry armoire. You can lay lippies side by side in one drawer, shadows on their sides in several drawers, foundation in another, blushes and glows in another, mascara and liners in another- that's what 7 drawers? If you got a big one, you'd still probably have a drawer free for brushes and one for other brands

I've also seen the tupperware systems. I think the one in the pic is from costco

I keep brushes in a ceramic jar and I used to keep my lippies in one of karen's organza bags but then you have to dump them all out when you're looking for a color.

If you have a cabinet, you can do velcro storage inside the door. I do it with magnets inside my medicine cabinet but velcro weighs less so it won't mess with the door. You can even glue a sheet of something velcro likes ot grab onto (like felt) so that's it's just one big area the velcro and pull on and off of.
