Prayers PLEASE.....

Post by hotmama » Thu Oct 02, 2008 12:27 pm

Hi ladies,
Sorry I havent been posting as much as usual but I've been lurking and reading. Truth is I'm really down right now. My youngest son who will be 4 this month has had gastrointestional problems all his life, he only weighs 27 pounds and wears a 2T, his 2 year old sister weighs 32 pounds. The catch? They dont know what the problem is!!! We had a colonoscopy and biopsy May 2007 and I was told verbally on the phone that everything was fine.
We are worried because colon cancer runs in my family, grandma, grandad, my father is in his final stages, and my sister had a rare colon disorder she almost died from until they finally diagnosed it at 16 years old, it left her with only a quarter of a colon. My mother panics because she says my hunnybunny shows the very same symptoms.
The catch now? We took him back last week because he has been in tears each time he has to potty, he shivers and sweats EACH time. It is heartbreaking to watch him struggle with something as simple as a potty break. He has been on a laxative since he was 1, thats the only solution the doctors have given thus far . Well at this visit we were told the report ACTUALLY was not ok. They found hyperplasia cells and ganglion cells (after research I still dont know what it means, its just not supposed to be there) The report the doctor presented said the test performed last year was too superficial to rule out anything.
So we have another emergency biopsy/colonoscopy scheduled for my fella Monday the 6th at 6a.m. I am a wreck. Whatever was there 18 months ago has had plenty of time to continue the party of growing. I just have had so much going on these past few months, separation from hubby (who says he is NOT coming to the hospital), being a single parent of 3, my oldest breaking his hand a week b4 school starts, my 2 year old flushing her rubber duckie down the toilet which cost $265 to retrieve....the list goes on. But none of that has knocked me off my feet like this latest with my little fella. Please pray for my Myles.
Thanks,
Nikki

I’m so sorry to hear about your little one. I wish you all the best and will keep you in my thoughts.

I worked in the health care filed for more than a decked, as an EMT, Lab Tech and Med Tech this may not be helpful but. Hyperlasial cells is a catch all term for “a lot” or “overly active” cells in an area. They can take on the form of a tumor, often benign. There are thousands of reasons an area may start producing to many cells. From your sons history the one that comes to the top of my head is irritation to the area, the body may be trying to protect itself from something.

I hope you get good news with the next exam.

Here is my hint for dealing with Dr’s, having worked with to many to count. You must remember that DR’s are admitted to medical schools based solely on their science grades at university and not at all on their people skills. They often need to be reminded that they are talking to a human that has not been force fed medical terms for 5 years. Don’t leave your next appointment until the Dr explains everything to you in terms that make sense to you and answers all your questions. If you need to be pushy, don’t worry about offending them their egos are far to large for that.

I have also worked in the medical fields. The above information from mgmsrk is good. I wish the best for you and your family.

And I still work in a medical field with far to many Doc's who have HUGE ego's ( I'm a nurse ) and that was the best advice anyone could have given you. You need to know what is going on and be certain that you understand it, so that you can be the best advocate for you child. Both you and your son are in my prayers. Hollis

Nikki, I'm decidedly *not* in the medical field *but* I DO know how overwhelming it is to try to absorb info when you're SO focused. One thing that might be helpful is to write questions down as you think of them & take that list with you when you see the doc ~ & just hand it to him/her. It might also help if you could possibly take a friend or family member with you to "help you listen" to the answers. That person may pick up info that you're missing. Do you know what I mean? Your excitement level (understandable panic) may prevent your understanding/taking in all the info. A friend will help.

Myles has us pulling for him!
