Dior's iridescent eyeshadows

Post by NomNom » Wed Feb 13, 2013 10:37 am

Hi everyone, I don't know if I posted this in the right place or not :geek:

I've been trying to find Dior's beige massai palette, and also Dior's iridescent leather palette.

Both of them have been discontinued, and especially beige massai is very, very hard to find. As most probably already know, there is no match for the iridescent eyeshadows Dior makes, they are buttery with perfect pigment, the inci list states that they use for example nylon 12 in them, one of the reason they are so buttery maybe?

The closest match I've ever gotten to the Dior shadows has actually been when pressing my mineral eyeshadows myself with some jojoba, so I thought why not ask here for example about the possibility to dupe some of the quints in terms of texture and colour?

If anyone has any ideas as to what colours might be dupes to beige massai, and iridescent leather, it would be much appreciated (so I can order them :P ) , I tried looking myself, but did not get very far, since I am not familiar with the colours and textures.

Also, as a wish to Karen, would it be possible to dupe the quints as eyeshadow kits? I don't know how hard it would be to try for the texture, but the colours might at least be possible?

I also read about the wishes for a liquid foundation, and just wanted to second that too, I have noticed that more, and more people who have used mineral foundation have become sensitive to it (me included, I had to go back to liquid). The scratching even a soft buki does when applying is too much, and a liquid foundation with good ingredients would be perfect.

The same happened with beeswax, I became very allergic to it after some years of switching to more natural stuff, and actually got perioral dermatitis before noticing the correlation with beeswax and skin irritation, luckily there is candelilla wax, and hemp wax etc.

For reference this is beige massai-

i feel like there are definitely some very similar shadows on the site if not exact dupes (most of them are dupes of other company's colors)

For the first palette take a look at highbeam, cloudberry, daiquiri, and quartzite
For the second take a look at the Naked Palette 2

i agree with xarata, expecially for the first palette. cloudberry immediately came to mind for the top left colour. for the top right the new colour goddess could be a good match. it has a similar texture as cloudberry, very soft and buttery to apply, and a lovely soft iridescent sheen to it.

if you could swatch the first palette as well, maybe more suggestions might pop up ;)

i had a bit of spare time, so i searched the entire site and my stash for possible dupes, and that's my findings. the * indicates which ones i think would match the best. the ? indicates colours i'm not too sure, but maybe you should check them out anyway.

iridescent leather:
#1 - velocity*, bailey, sandy*, giggle, highbeam, frisk*
#2 - tweed*, blanket fort, sierra, saddle up*, chic?, aztec, rizzo
#3 - bittersweet, brown sugar, chocolate twinkle, vogue
#4 - posh?, quartzite*, bailey?, mazel tov*, motive
#5 - sprite*, sonic*, fire?

beige massai:
top left - cloudberry*
top right - goddess*, linen, restless
bottom left - daiquiri, fierce
bottom right - quartzite
center - dolce?, hairpin, bittersweet*

hope that helps, but even if they don't end up to be exact dupes you will be left with a bunch of really pretty - and more natural - eyeshadows :D

Thank you so much to both of you for taking the time to look at these, and coming up with suggestions, it is very much appreciated!

I agree that cloudberry seems to come very close (love the name btw, since I live here in Finland, and my family is from lapland :P ), I actually loved all the colours it was swatched with. What is the suede texture like in IRL?

I think that goddess might be too "white", the dior palette has a slight yellowish colour to the lightest one? I am going to add a swatch of beige massai in daylight, you can see it's quite yellowish.

I love daiquiri, and fierce, especially daiquiri. Quartzite is also gorgeous, I can't see bittersweet properly in the swatch, unfortunately.

This is what beige massai looks like when swatched-

I looked at the naked 2 for iridescent leather, but they seem to have a different quality, more shimmery, than iridescent? For reference I actually hated UDs naked 1 palette, horrible quality, and some really horrid colours  I always thought it funny since everyone seems to love naked, but I have seen more and more unhappy reviews about it now.

Velocity looks very shimmery, and also frisk, but sandy looks more creamy?

I don't know about tweed, is the swatch the same as IRL? Saddle up comes close I think.

Mazel tov is much too shimmery I think. I'm not sure if my eyes are deceiving, but I can't find Sprite in the swatch pic? Sonic is gorgeous.

Most of all I liked the colours that were swatched with daiquiri, cloudberry etc. they look so good, also sonic is something that is going on my list.

Thank you again bellatete, and Xarata for your help :P

I am going to add a swatch pic of the earth reflection palette too, can anyone think of a similar silk naturals shade to the golden one on the left, the first one? For me it has been the best highlight colour I've ever used, and I've been trying to find something similar, Dior doesn't do this as just one colour.

i'll start with your last question, the gold highlight: papyrus and homecoming queen come to mind for that one.

seeing the swatches of beige massai makes me re-think some (if not most) of my recommendations.
the two lightest colours look darker and also pretty matte in your swatch.

beige massai:
top left - daiquiri, tiger lily?
top right - exposed, shell
bottom left - ???
bottom right - quartzite, chic, bittersweet
center - chocolate twinkle, vogue

regarding the suede texture, the swatches of cloudberry, daiquiri and sweet tea are pretty accurate. suedes are my favourite ;) they are quite opaque, while still being very blendable and flattering.

for a more reliable swatch of tweed you can check out the swatch photo of brown sugar. for bittersweet i found this photo:

you are right about sprite  it is not swatched there, but i found a photo with it:

if you would like me to do any comparison swatches, let me know. i'm not sure though if i have all of them on hand ;)

Now that I've seen them swatched, the deep coppery color on the bottom left from the Beige Massai palette looks a lot like SN Legend. Papyrus, Homecoming Queen, and Juiced all make good highlighters with a bit of yellow/gold to them. Homecoming Queen may be a bit shimmery for your taste-my hunch would be Papyrus will be the best match for something not too whitish and not too shimmery.

If a colour is a very close match but you think it's too shimmery/sparkly you can also use the new Welcome Matte Eye Shadow Mattifier, it works like a charm!
