Skin Care for Inflammatory Acne w/ Retin-A usage

Post by cosmeticcosmos » Tue Jan 18, 2011 9:05 pm

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for a new skin care routine, and looking at SN in attempt to start using some natural products. I've had cystic acne for at least 4 years (I'm, 27), and its for the most part under control, but I still have a few cysts on my cheeks that won't clear up. The progress that was made with clearing up the acne was completely due to daily use of Retin-A, as well as occasional topical antibiotics. So, I don't want to stop using those, b/c if I do, within a few days, my skin can and will become worse.

Overall, my skin looks much better than before because of the Retin-A, but I would like to get rid of even more of my breakouts, improve texture, get my skin to glow a little more and become less confused (it feels very dry and oily at the same time). Despite using gentle products, the Retin-A, the harsh winter, and dry air from our heating system is making my skin ever so dry! WhenI get out of the shower and my skin feels so dry that I can't even move my face. Within an hour or two, my skin is oily to the touch, and by the end of the day, very uncomfortable with how oily it feels. I've done AHAs and BHAs before with and without the Retin-A, but at least for the winter time- I feel the Retin-A is doing enough exfoliation, so I don't think I should add an exfoliant to my regimen- as that will be overkill. And as I said, its really mostly inflammatory acne, no blackheads or anything. I also have very bad and painful inflammatory acne on my back.

So I guess I'm looking for a regimen or general info (cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer and any other masks, products, foods, supplements, herbs, or advice you may have) from any of you that have or have had inflammatory acne.

Thank you so much for your help! :)

I would be careful about starting much at all. I think this needs to be a very gradual process for you. From your description, I think a serum is a great place to start, and I would go with Green Tea & Aloe. You definitely need hydration for your skin. If you have been using a moisturizer, I would stick with it for a while. At a later time, choose something very light and simple.

What kind of cleanser to you use? That might be the only other thing I would consider changing for several months. KISS Cleaner with a foamer bottle would probably do well. I hesitate to offer advice on adding anything else with the Retin-A. There may be some that have real life experience with it that can help you more than I.

Sometimes acne can be an allergic reaction to food you're ingesting. I'm not sure if this is true for your case, but dairy and gluten can sometimes create constant breakouts. I used to have terrible acne on my chin. Once I gave up dairy, it cleared up and has been fine ever since. Try an elimination diet to see if it makes a difference. Sometimes you just have to make an adjustment to your health plan and that will take care of things.
