I also keep tomatoes, onions, fruits, etc in a bowl instead of refrigerator and I use a little mesh umbrella thing when the flies start going crazy. It isn't terribly attractive but it's...almost cute. lol! but it does its job, so I love it.

Our dogs help with bug control as well...not as well as a dog we had a couple of years ago, though. He would see a bug and then actually hunt it down until he found it and ate it!

As far as cleaning out the disposal, instead of just pouring soap & water (or boiling water) down the drain, try this: Pour some baking soda down the drain and follow with some vinegar. You may have to pour vinegar in a few times to react with all of the baking soda. After you've done that, then run hot water down the drain while running the disposal...all of this really helps clean out the disposal area and cleans/deoderizes it.

I've heard that bay leaves repel insects but IDK if it is true.

I don't have troubles usually cause my climate is cool most of the year but that's the one thing I've heard.

I keep fruits in a bowl too and I put a cone made of net over it. I bought my one in Ikea, but I think you can find it other shops too. But flies keep flying.
