Super Serum

Post by RGup » Thu Feb 18, 2010 11:33 pm

I was reading the description for the Super Serum and it said to not use any type of acid with it. Does retinoic acid (tretinoin/Retin-A) count? I use a 0.025% cream for my acne, but it tends to leave my skin super dry and flakey, and the Super Serum looks like the perfect moisturizer and antioxidant. Would this convert the Niacinamide into niacin? Thanks for any replies!

Edit: I forgot to mention that I alternate this with epiduo, an adapalene/benzoyl peroxide mix. Would this serum affect that too? Not worried about my cleanser. It says it is pH balanced on it.

i definitely wouldn't mix it with the benzoyl peroxide product but am not sure about the retin-A. I think the few that use super serum and an acid use one in the morning and the other at night or alternate every other day so they don't get combined.

I'm one who is sensitive to the super serum just on it's own. Basically,if you have a reaction (from sensitivity or from combining with an acid) you get a red rash on your face wherever the super serum was- almost like really bad sunburn. Small reactions will fade in about an hour or two. The worst one i had turned my face flaming bright sunburn red all over and then faded overnight (thankfully) to a kind of lightly burned pink for a few days (not a holy cow what happened color, but not the natural color of my face either-i don't think it was something people really noticed but i could.)

When used appropriately (in my case with caution) super serum can even out skin tone and do wonders with acne. I'm sure someone who uses acids will get back to you on the retin-A, but my advice is to proceed with caution, do your first experiment in the evening (so if you react you don't have to go out in public looking burned), and figure out what works for you.

Sample, Sample, Sample. And please do a patch test if you decide to go ahead without getting a definite answer. I kind of think retinoic acid and Super Serum are overkill if used in the same application. Plus the dry and flaky part just sounds like your skin should not be put through any more for that application.

I don't have experience with the products you are using to give advice on this one, and Karen is moving the shop this week. I would send the question through the website. You may not get an answer for several days, but I think her answer would be worth the wait.

I have used super serum immediately after 2.5% benzoyl peroxide, and my skin didn't react at all. I would be careful though if your skin is already flaky and sensitive, as the super serum contains some pretty powerful actives. I have no idea on the retin-A either.

I realised I can use Super Serum as a zit killer. When I feel one coming, I apply a generous amount on that spot before I go to bed. Usually the next morning, the "zitty" feeling is gone in that spot. I wonder why? Is it supposed to? It's a good thing though..
