However, as far as I can tell, the only REAL no-no's (as in, absolutely avoid them) are grains and legumes. Seems like all the other "discouraged" foods would be okay in moderation (salt, sugar, dairy, etc) - so that is what I'm planning on doing. Oh, and I will also eat sprouted grains (like the Ezekiel brand) because germination alters the chemistry of the seeds.
Thank you for all the details! I'm glad to hear about the sprouted grains, and I think I may just give them a try. Good luck with your diet!

Thank you!! The sprouted grains are just so full of good protein and fiber that they make an awesome health food anyway :) And they taste pretty good. I order cases on amazon b/c my grocery store carries a limited selection of them.

So far: I have less pain, more energy, and better mood on my new diet. I think that the skin condition that I self-diagnosed with the help of this board's beautiful members is clearing up!! It is too soon to really tell, but I thought I had Keratosis pilaris a couple months ago and I had had it under control with Karen's products but now it seems like my skin is much less sensitive, and I can be more "lax" about scrubs, masks, etc, and my face stays clear just washing and moisturizing, which it has never done before.

It's too soon to say how the diet is working but so far, no ill effects, only good. I don't get hungry as often, either, so I'm less prone to snacking in between meals. I think I'll probably lose weight... also, I'm exercising more, because I have more energy. Seems like my memory is a little better, too.

You mean you order cases of sprouted grains or products (like bread) made out of them? I'm going to try and sprout the grains I already have in my cabinets (will check to make sure I can do it to all, as I've seen before that some shouldn't be sprouted as they are toxic). Yay, new project! Time to make room in the kitchen :)

I'm glad to hear your diet is already going well!

The products (not the sprouts) - I buy tortillas and pastas and that kind of thing.

Let me know how your sprouting goes... I'd like to try it eventually.

So far so good. I'm using Easy Sprouter with a salad sprout mix, and had wonderful results with a bit of time investment (maybe a total of 2-3 mins twice a day). I already ordered more green mixes and legumes as well, can't wait to try those. I highly recommend www.sproutpeople.com - they have interesting mixes, various sprouting devices and great video instructions.

I have been reading and researching a lot, and I've decided to take it a step forward and start down the line to an almost raw-food diet. I haven't decided to go completely raw, and that wouldn't happen for a couple of years anyway, but right now the paleo and raw food combination (with a bit of cheating because I'm having a tough time letting go of my kefir) sounds reasonable enough :) I'm paying attention to food combining as well, and getting some equipment for home. I can't tell at this point how much more energy I have, but I have already lost 2 pounds since I've started after having been stuck in a rut for a long time.

I can't thank you enough for starting this thread. Now I just hope my boyfriend will survive on sprouts and nuts alone, hehe. Nah, I'll continue cooking but even more consciously than before.

So far... lost 10 pounds... have had much less pain... started working out again, pain-free... and my skin cleared up! Plus, more energy.

DH still eats junk... he just eats it at work now :) We eat free-range meats and Ezekiel pastas to keep him happy and salads to keep me happy.

Glad to hear the paleo/raw thing is going well for you too!!

Oh and I bookmarked the sprout page so I can order a sprouting kit this week!

I lost 6lbs already, and really happy about it. I could stop now, but I think I'll keep going :)

Boyfriend looooves the Ezekiel pasta, but I doubt I can turn him to the seaweed noodles, so the transition is slower (less drastic) for him.

I had a bit of a yucky side effect: I broke out like crazy, ugly painful ones on my chin that are just starting to clear up. I haven't changed anything else but my diet, so I'll write it off as purging. It's starting to go back to normal now, and it was totally worth it :)
