colors for daugher, 12, grn eyes, med brn hr, freckles

Post by Roberta » Fri May 30, 2008 7:11 am

Hi again,
My daughter, age 12 1/2, is absorbed in the eye shadow pages right now, and will be also interested in the lip colors. Greenish eyes, freckly skin with a lot of color in her face (she really doesn't NEED blush like I do), medium brown long straight hair, oval face. Gentle, sweet personality. Interested in shades in purple, blue, green, pink, and gold for eye shadows. Could you suggest a combination a three or four to start with? What about lip colors and types of lip sticks or glosses? Peachish-pinks? Please suggest anything else you think would be nice for a young girl. Thank you.

Last of all - for me (age 48) I seem to be allergic to mascara. Every time I wear it I end up with a terrible headache. Are yours hypoallergenic? I like mascaras that really plump and lengthen my long lashes. Thank you.

I am replying to my own question! My daughter and I sat for hours yesterday looking at all the eye shadow colors! Wow, what a selection! We boiled it down to four colors for her:
Ocean (too dark??? she doesn't think so)
Butterfly-blue
Wink-wink
Scallop-pink
I may order a few more pinky colors for myself, which my daughter will probably use more than I do. Whisper, Nekkid, Hint, Naughty, Fawn? Which is best for something subtle?

Very hard to decide on lip glosses too. Top two were: Pout and Infatuation. She also liked Damsel and Foreplay.

My daughter loves the packaging of the glosses, and wanted to order a lot just because of the nice packaging! :)

In general, this is the most beautiful, user-friendly, pleasant web site I have ever seen. Whoever designed this site deserves a prize. It has been really fun for my daughter and I to browse the different pages together. The color swatches on actual skin are a fantastic idea. It really helps to get an idea of how the color looks on someone.

Hi, Roberta! Once upon a time, I was a 12 yo with grn eyes, med brn hr, & freckles,LOL! Damsel & Foreplay are awesome lippies, sheer & delightful! Sheer shadows with a punch for summer, take a look at Breathe, Teal Appeal, & HighBeam & see what she thinks.

For yourself since you specified subtle, I like the Chanel dupes Fawn & Sandstone. Nekkid (MAC Naked Lunch dupe) is pretty, too!

Can't resist the opportunity to spread the word about the latest colors that I love for outer corners & wetlining ~ Brimstone, Haze, & Sea Grass! Love them!

Have *fun*, whatever you do! :D

Hey Roberta!

It sounds like you have picked some good ones. I guess if I were picking for my 12 1/2 year old, I would try to steer her toward the highlighter colors. However, the Butterfly Blue, Scallop Pink, and Wink Wink are great choices. Not sure on the Ocean. It is a little dark, but with minerals you can apply them lightly. I have to agree with Mikie in that Teal Appeal and Breathe are very fun colors. I also think if you get the Whisper, Nekkid, and Hint, she will definitely be 'borrowing' them. You also have some good choices in glosses. My DD who is 10 and not really interested in makeup quite yet wears Gold Blush. Pout and Damsel are great choices, as is Foreplay. Infatuation may be a little dark. I guess I am a little conservative in choosing colors for young girls. There is definitely enough of a range to choose the more subtle colors. Even the subtle colors are very beautiful and fun.

Thank you so much, everyone, for the replies. My daughter is also interested in foundation. Her skin is freckly and sort of ruddy/reddish, and she has a bit of acne right now. Suggestions for foundation? I think my daughter will love mixing her own foundation from your kits. She makes her own earrings, necklaces, etc., why not make-up, too?

Also, for me, what do you think of Naughty eye shadow? It looks close to Fawn - I don't know if it is necessary to get two colors so close to each other. Or maybe they are more different than they look on the computer.

So the two questions (for now) are:
1. which color foundation for my daughter?
2. Fawn or Naughty, what is the difference?

And, when I read the reply out loud to my daughter about her "borrowing" my eyeshadows, she said, "No, not borrow, STEAL!"

For a 12 year old- Naughty. Fawn is great, but a little more "mature" (I feel the same way about Ocean for her too- it's matte, either Butterfly Blue or Wave are more sparkley/fun). Breathe might be fun too- that's the one that all of the "cool girls" wear at the local high school.

I'd go with the foundation sample kit for her- more things to play with. If she's tan- start with Warm Gold, if she's not super tan then Ebony. She can use the extra colors just about anywhere- so they can be eye shadow, brow powder, etc. If she's a little acne prone then a sample of Unblush might be good too- it's nice to take away some of the redness. Unfortunately there isn't a lot you can do to cover freckles without looking very masky- but they're a symbol of youth.

Glows are fun too! Sample sizes are pretty plentiful and you can wear them anywhere. Pout, Gold Blush, Berry Crush, Ashley would all be fun lippies for her! Damsel is cute too. Foreplay may be a little bit too warm for her- it's a little on the bronzie side.

Have fun with it! I'm thrilled to know you like the site!

Roberta,

I know that SN sells mascara - I am sure that might work - but also there are several natural brands of cosmetics that sell mascara that is gentle. You will find the big names at your local organic grocery store, probably. I don't know if I'm supposed to review other brands of products here but of the ones I've tried, Ecco Bella works the best. They generally have a different texture than the department store brands but EB's is easy to apply and lasts all day (but is not waterproof). I haven't tried the one SN sells yet though. It might be even better!

I do use the mascara from SN just about daily (I threw my others out). I know it is formulated with better ingredients than most. As far as hypoallergenic goes, I am not completely certain on this. I have had very good luck with it. I can remove it much easier than my old waterproof, but still does not smudge when it matters. I also would never pay more than $10 for mascara, so I can't really compare it to some of the high end ones. I know Rhys uses it, too, and might chime in here.

I'd be hard-pressed to call any cosmetic hypoallergenic. Even really gentle stuff can sometimes be problematic - one of the things I recommend when somebody's face is a mess is to use a mix of ground oatmeal and distilled water to wash until it calms down - but there are a few girls out there with a sensitivity to oats. Doesn't happen too often, but still...you can't guarantee that nobody will have a reaction to something.

I think SN's mascara is one of the better ones in terms of potentially less-irritating ingredients, and I like it - but what I'd really like is something that darkens my lashes but doesn't lengthen them. I'm a redhead, so my lashes are pale, but they go all the way up to my eyebrows - and I'm not keen on cutting them. The SN mascara is one of the better ones - it doesn't look like spider-eyes.

One I'd avoid is Blinc's Kiss Me - that creates tubes around your lashes. True, I didn't have an allergic reaction to it, but those stupid tubes don't all slide off easily even with oil. I think it took about four days to get the lot of it off - ouch! And I'm fairly fanatic about removing eye make up. I've heard that the knock-offs found at places like Walmart are even worse, so just don't go there (I got a couple of sample tubes for a penny each, so I wasn't out a lot of money, but....).

I know some companies are putting out cake mascara again - that's the kind that comes in a solid palette, and you use a comb to put it on - may be worth checking out (I haven't seen any locally), just make sure that things like tar are not amongst the ingredients.

Oh, and of the natural mascaras, don't buy Suncoat. They make other nice products, like nail polish, but avoid their mascara like the plague. It is waxy and falls off and is hard to apply. :)
