too brown?

Post by UmEnis » Wed Dec 23, 2009 11:07 am

Hello all,

I am new to MMU and just tried SN's olive (10:1) and while the olive certainly looked to be the closest to my skin tone I noticed after settling into the oil of my skin it looked brown in places? Does this mean i mixed it too dark? It looks quite light in the jar so I was nervous to add more ivory. Also, it looked ashy in some places, could that mean I need to add some warmth. That would be a big surprise, I always thought I was the classic Arabian olive skin tone.

If it helps I am somewhere in a weird neutral area between winter and autumn. I can wear many of the deeper Autumn colors: olive green, espresso, brown, rust suit me very well, but I also always get compliments in the deep winter colors: fuscia, burgundy, deep red, black, navy blue. I have red hair from henna (which suits me very well) and those Autumn deep hazel (green/ grey/ brown) eyes (not the clear winter bright blue ,green or brown eyes). But the clincher is white--it never fails me.

OOPS. Just realized this could go in the new foundation help thread. If a moderator could move it, I'd be grateful :)

It sounds like it is too dark.....it will usually look lighter in the jar than what you might think it should....

It is quite possible the Warm Gold will suit you better.......it is olive plus warm/peach....It is not as dark a color base as Olive....you will need just a little over half the amount of Ivory so maybe 1:6 or so.

Hello Emily (I almost wrote may1em... old habits :) ) , nice to see a familiar face here!

Well, Jen, it turns out that just adding 2 scoops more ivory helped with the color dramatically. I really didn't notice any ashiness this time. I'll check again next time.

But I am having another issue, I am not a foundation wearer. I generally have decent skin, thank God, and am mostly into a bold eye. I have never liked how foundation looked on anyone up close and never liked the feel on my skin. But I had my makeup done professionally for my brother-in-laws wedding and just fell in love with how the airbrush look of the foundation (from far away, at least) set off my beloved "bold eye"

Well, I'm very happy to say that the silk naturals feels great. Like wearing nothing! I love the feel of it. I applied it about 1/2 hour after washing and moisturizing and misted with water. Felt great and stayed put all night long.

But, I can still see it. Which kills me. I really think I've got the color right now, it matched my jawline and neck exactly. I buffed like crazy with the brush and I just dusted the end of the brush to apply, so I don't think I applied to much. If I step back from the mirror it looks amazing, that airbrushed look I fell in love with. But if I get right up there I can see it and it has that typical foundation look that I hate. What can I do about that? I want it to look invisible, even right up at the mirror. Or is that impossible and just a part of foundation?

Hi UmEnis -

I know what you mean - I hate seeing foundation, too. If you're certain you've got the colour right, then first - don't buff. There isn't anything in SN that needs buffing into the skin - gently brushing it on will do you just fine.

My second thought is what kind of brush are you using? For light coverage, I'd try a kabuki, or even a large fibreoptic. SN has kabukis, but only small fibreoptic brushes - you can get a good size one at AdornedwithGrace, and they don't charge the earth to ship internationally. Fibreoptics pick up very little powder and spread it nicely, so that may be an option for you.

I'm picky myself, but the third thing to remember is that nobody but you is going to be standing two inches from your face looking for foundation traces. But if you really are seeing it in normal light (magnifying mirrors don't count), I'd suggest both not buffing, and making sure you're using as light a brush as possible. As well as double checking the colour match.

I hope this helps some.

Best -

Really? Don't buff? I never would have thought of that. I spent a lot of time researching MMU and everyone says: buff, buff, buff. So the buff instruction is specific to particular ingredients that are not in SN?

As far as people 2 inches from my face looking for foundation: people, no; person, yes--though he'd better not be looking for foundation traces.

I really do think I got the color right now. I have very typical semetic coloring--so olive was just clearly the best (and its nice to find one of the few companies that understands olive doesn't mean tanned).

So is it possible, with practice of course, to be able to stand 2 inches from a mirror and not see any foundation-- just perfect air brushed skin. Or is that a utopian ideal that is never going to happen?
