Eyeshadow Application....

Post by la_canadiense(01) » Tue Dec 15, 2009 9:57 am

Just wondering what is your method of choice? ;)
I like using a brush (I have EDM, BE & anon ones) but then I find that some of the sparkliness or shimmeryness/pearlyness sort of gets buffed away :( , and that is with me only just sort of 'placing' the shadows on. If I move the brush around for blending, then there is really no shimmer at all left! This has happend with my SN e/s as well (although less so with the SN ones than others, i.e. EDM).......they don't go completely matte, but I prefer the shimmer, unless I am applying a matte e/s on purpose!
So I typically use my baby finger  . The only problem is the massive fallout on my face....so to avoid this I have to bend my head forward whilst using a mirror and the swirly dush in one hand and applying with the other!
....(I won't let my DH see me applying makeup for this reason, he already thinks I am too obsessed, if he saw my crazy application habits, not sure how he'd react.... )

what do you guys do to keep the colour true (I prefer not to foil) but still get some use out of your brushes? :?:

I'm a finger-patter. I learned the whole multiple brush technique thing in the 80s and then the 90s with the "cosmetics" surgery using 3 or 4 eyeshadows to sculpt the eyesocket and hide imperfections with makeup rather than actual surgeries (yikes!) Remember how obsessive it was back then for power-dressing polished perfection? Since switching to minerals, that's all flown out the window as they can be difficult to control with fluffy brushes. Synthetic brushes are fine but they tend to lay the colours down flat.

So.. fingertips for me and a much more casual approach. I find that refreshing and more enjoyable. It helped make the switch in my mind from makeup being a grooming essential to become acceptably presented, to makeup becoming something fun and a little nuance through which to express some character. Halleluja for the freedom to wear sparkling electric turquoise rather than four shades of matte beige.

Hey, I like playing with little brushes!

But no - no four shades of matte beige (I look awful with matte beige eye shadow), and just pat the shadow on (whether on a brush or with your fingers).

If you need to blend out a line, either the brush, gently, in one direction, or fingers is fine.

Little brushes are for touches of colour here and there, useful for those of us who don't have a crease (sometimes), brow powder, liner, and things like that.

Or painting fun colours on the kids :) But even though I like brushes, you can probably get by without them.

Oh yes, I've got those little brushes from the Ultimate brush kit and those are fantastic for doing a little detailing. The shape of my eye doesn't suit eyeliner underneath, but I can get away with a line of something shimmery underneath - that's fun. Generally, for lid washes and crease, fingers it is for me, but honestly, that's more to do with laziness than anything. I've got a semi-circular headed broad flat brush (like the concealer brush) which is fab for laying down minerals flatly and neatly. I've just got a thing about playing instead. ;)

I apply my eye make-up before doing the rest of my face if I know I will have the time. That way, if I do get fallouts, they are easy to remove with some eye make-up remover. If I don't have the time to do my eye make-up first, then I have a standard wash that is not fallout prone so fallouts really isn't an issue for me. But...

I do tend to favour my EDM junior eye kabuki (a fluffy brush about the same size as en eye shadow brush) over my ordinary eye shadow brushes. I swirl, swirl and swirl the colour I want into it, then tap of the excess and apply. It helps both with the vibrancy of the colour and fallouts. Plus, it is a shorter brush which is great because I keep bumping longer handles into the mirror!

If you have real problems with fallouts, you could try and cut a piece of stiffer paper so you can hold that underneath your eye. A bit cumbersome, but me myself just never could do the powder method because it settles in all the fine lines even if it is translucent.

I do now tend to do my eyes first. depends on if I have time.
I also love the EDM junior kabuki! I also have the two new ones, and they work really well. They are also good for minimizing fall out, but at a risk of losing some of the loveliness of the minerals, so I am always not sure what I want to do in the AMs! I end up using my fingers more often than not.
I like a nice fluffy flimsy-ish brush, like the dome one, for applying darker colours, as it applies really lightly so they are easier to wear.
I always apply my wash with a brush, something like Vanilla, or Nymph, and that has seemed to work well.
I can't see myself using a sifter paper or somethign underneath my eyes. Just not coordinated enough to hold that there while applying at the same time! the leaning forward does work well, but I hate seeing the fallout fall to the ground!!!

I guess fall outs are just a fact of life with minerals....oh well! it is worth it right??

Just after ordering my 7th order!! AGHHHH. they haven't all been big, but relatively....so, I had to get another eye shadow.
I couldnt' settle on which one between Brown Sugar and Taupetastic, I went with the taupetastic since I have numerous copperish ones now (Chestnut, Fete, Plush) and that gets such good reviews! Brown sugar is not far down my list however! :)

If you put a little loose powder below your eyes, like finishing, then any fall out can easily be brushed away.

I've actually been using a mini concealer brush. It seems to keep the colors concentrated and true. The EcoTools Angled Bamboo Eye Liner Brush also does wonders.

The only color I've been having trouble with is Aubergine. It shows up kind of a dark gray on me. How do I get it that sparkly vibrant purple I keep seeing on other people's swatches?

Me too. It needs to be wet-lined to show up vibrantly. When I first wore it, I was a little disappointed but if you apply it with a dampened brush, the shimmer shows through and it comes to life more. You can also apply it over a line of clear cream eyeliner, or use a mixing medium to wet it (but water works fine).

I have been relativity lazy lately (compared to this last summer when I went overboard with makeup) so i have been mainly using one $1 eye shadow brush from another company to cover my lid and browbone, and then sometimes I use a $3 contour brush by the same company to add a darker shade to the crease. I have very hooded eyes so it's not really pointful to put much in the crease, haha.
