Color me beautiful :)

Post by Annika » Wed Dec 02, 2009 2:25 pm

Hi, here's another EDM convert :) I've used EDM for about a year now but by now I am 1) kind of tired of their colors, and 2) REALLY sick and tired of it all after the recent events, even though I didn't take part in them. I followed the forum all the time but never posted.

Anyway. I have found a new love in SN :D I ordered a couple of eyeshadows and samples last week and got them the other day (SUPER quick, thanks Karen &co!) and am SO in love with the shadows - Velocity is gorgeous, haven't had the time to try Idolize yet but it looks gorgeous, 9:59 looks a bit like Laptop and will surely be used a lot, also got Danny which is a color that reminds me of Cypress but with a lovely silky finish.

But as all my fellow makeup addicts know, you always want more.

I haven't ordered any SN foundation yet, because I'm not sure where to start. Warm Gold, Buttery Gold, Olive? I've used Golden Fair - Olive Fair - Olive Neutral and in the end ordered a full size Light Almond from EDM which seemed like my best match. Not quite sure if it is right though. I am definitely warm, quite fair, hazel eyes and medium blonde hair. I have zero pink in my skin, but lots of ruddiness because of my sensitive and thin (if that makes sense) skin. To look good I have to match the color of my neck/chest rather than the actual color of my face!

Here's a photo from three years ago, that shows my coloring quite well.

I love makeup. I love bold eye makeup. I am a hairdresser so I can wear bright colors every day to work, which is great :D

Give me your best shot! Foundation, blusher, eyes, lippies... what have you? Give me a complete makeover!

(edited the title. I'd rather look beautiful than bad  )

Ack...I liked Color me Baaaad better....the new title just reminds me of the 'Color me Beautiful' fiasco of the 80's that had me wearing cool toned makeup for years. You might be too young to remember getting color typed back then. I was just a teen.

Anyway....I see lots that has the potential to match you. You are right...no pink. Ebony is out. Warm Gold probably won't be quite right, either, too peachy. I think you are going to fall in Olive or Buttery Gold. I can't get a good read on the pic for the amount of yellow in your skin. If you want to call it good, you could probably do well with the Olive and Yellow Color Booster. But you might be able to do Buttery Gold on its own. In Olive....start at .5Olive:7 Ivory (a half scoop Olive in case you want to test the other combo), or 1Buttery Gold:10. The high numbers are kind of ballpark figures, so you may need to add more Ivory. If the Buttery mix is too yellow, and the Olive mix is not yellow enough, we need to add Yellow to the Olive mix. (Have I lost you, yet?)

Blush...Satisfied and Maybe Baby (I suggest this one because you like a bold eye). Stardust.....

Eyes....Must have Sonic (the MAC Vanilla clone), and I think you ought to go with some of the morphing colors from the summer....Quiver, Pop, Groove, and Fairy Dust. Put those with a bold black liner and eyeshadow primer and you have the coolest looking bold eye. Tone down the liner, and it lightens the whole look for more everyday.

Lippies...You need Breathless or Maiden as an everyday color, but after that I am thinking Mirage or Centerfold for your bold eye days, and Hot Blooded for your bold lip days.

Thanks Jen, this is great! I remember that book, my mom bought it and color typed all of us verrrry badly... she made me a Winter/Summer, and I am everything but! She was so certain that I would grow up to be a hazel-eyed Snow White with dark hair and white skin.. not sure how that would happen though...

I actually got a sample of Satisfied with my order and LOVED it, so now I know that I can trust you ;) and will definitely look up the other colors you suggested :D

As far as foundation goes, do you think it is better to add Yellow to Olive than to mix Buttery Gold and Olive, or could that be an option too?

aaaaaaaaaah I want to order more makeup noooooowwwww!! :D

I am all for simplicity.....if you can get by with one color base, your foundation color is much more reproducible. The more times you stick in a measuring spoon, the more error that can come into play (can you tell I am originally an analytical chemist by trade, then turned SAHM and foundation guru!) You will have more control with the Olive/Yellow Booster Method, but it might take some adjusting every now and again. I don't think you will need Buttery Gold and Olive in one mix.

Hi Annika -

I can't help with color advice, but I wanted to say that your skin is gorgeous and I love your hair. I am a curly girl myself, with a very similar cut, but I just dyed my hair brown. Anyway, glad to see you over hear. I too am from the EDM forum! Let the new addiction begin. SN's foundation is amazing. I get compliments on my makeup since I started wearing it and I think my skin has actually improved. Jen is a mastermind in color...I don't know how she does it, but I am sure glad she does. Good luck!!

Thanks Jen, that makes sense!
Babydoll, you really are a babydoll :) Thank you for your kind words! My hair is much longer now but I am proud to say that I haven't put a straightening iron to it in 2½ years - I even run a Swedish website inspired by naturallycurly.com :) I used to have so much problem with my skin but it has improved vastly since I started using mmu and also since I stopped using anything with mineral oils and silicones. I still get the occasional breakout but at least now the pimples come one at a time!

I am so happy to have found SN and my wishlist keeps getting longer and longer... I'm wearing Idolize today all over lid and crease with a thin black liner (Smokey from EDM) and love the look.

May I also rave a bit about Sleep in a Jar? I have bad under-eye circles and right above the cheekbone I have some blue veins that pretty much nothing has managed to cover without looking cakey and like I'm wearing a whole lot of makeup. I love colors and all but I'd rather not have my base being noticeable at all. I've bought ALL the concealers from EDM and made custom mixes but never found a remedy for those veins.
Well, I ordered samples of all the peach Sleep in a Jar's. First off, they're all gorgeous "clean" peach colors, there's nothing tan or beige or yellow about them. Extra light is much too light unless I go for a racoon look, but works beautifully as a base/highlighter on eyelid and browbone.
Light and Medium are both good, I can see how Light would be perfect in the winter and Medium in summer. Right now I'm somewhere in between, it is winter but I have a bit of a tan so I mix the two and BAM! No circles, no racoon look, no bags, no nothing. If I do a no-makeup look I can easily get by just using this on the eye area and nothing else. It is not cakey, not powdery, not pasty, not noticeable at all - but it covers up everything I want covered. Love!

I just wanted to say ditto on all fronts. I've been here all of two days and I already think Jen and Karen are amazing! Also, I think this thread ought to be renamed. You're already beautiful. :)

Just wanted to say hi, and comment on your pretty pic!

I'm the official Centerfold pusher (ok, not really, sorta) - looking at your coloring and lips you're in the same range as I, and I love it for nude lips with bold eyes. Daydream or Carnation would be nice light non-barbie-pink colors. What colors do you prefer anyway? Can you wear brown nudes or pink nudes?

You also gotta try Eclipse, over nude (Karen sells a good one) or dark base - you want bold, you get bold ;). Burnished is gorgeous too, even just as a liner. A good highlighter/base would be Boom, and you can build pretty much whatever you want on top of that! There are many hazel ladies on this board, I can't really comment on matching that, but purples and olives are usually a good direction. The E/Ss are categorized by color as well as purpose or finish. I would add Vineyard and Gargle Blaster to Jen's suggestion in those categories, and some of the new golds - it is the season! For blushes, I think you would look nice in Babydoll if you want something pinker, or even Tart Light - you would be surprised how naturally 'flushy' the latter shows up on pretty much any type of skin. Or the new colors, Flair and Stellar. And you can always just make a lip gloss out of the sample if it doesn't work out ;) Flirt could also work as a lighter plummy/neutral blush.

Have fun!

So... I basically should get every color SN has on offer, right? ;)

My lips are very pale in themselves so too light lip colors tend to make me look strange, especially if they are too cool or beige in which case I look kind of dead :? - then again Siesta was one of my favorite lip colors from EDM and in another thread someone compared it to Mirage so maybe that could work... I guess I opt for peach nudes rather than brown or pink :)

I think Eclipse was one of the shadows I got that I haven't yet tried... I fell for its description, black with gold shimmer... I love gold :D

thanks everyone, this forum is great!
