Blush placement ?

Post by WendyD » Thu Nov 12, 2009 5:53 pm

Hello, my name is Wendy, and I have large cheeks. I love blushes (most of my MMU collection consists of blushes... no FS SN ones yet though  ). Because of my chubbular, hamster-like cheeks though, it can be a bit difficult for me to figure out where to put my blush because... well, my whole FACE is cheek. My blush always looks... a little off, to me anyways... Like a random SPLOTCHET of colour on my face.

This is me. As you can see, I don't really have any countouring, or prominent cheek bones.

See? A random splotch of colour. If course, I don't normally look like that, nor do I wear blush that heavily. But it does show my usual blush placement. While my blush looks fine on an angle, when I look forward, it seems kinda odd to me, especially when I'm not smiling.

I use the StudioTools duo-fiber blush to apply my blush about 99% of the time. The head is a bit large, so more precise application can be difficult. When I'm not using the foptic, I'm using this horribly scratchy angled blush brush from my old BE kit... While it's tiny and gives precise application, it's quite painful to use. I'll get a new ABB eventually... hopefully soon :) But even with the ABB, the placement never quite looked right...

I've tried the smile trick, but that doesn't work at all for me. My blush always ends up way low

Could any of you ladies lend a hand? Drawing a shape in on my face where the blush should go would be great <3. Thank you!

I have no advice, I'm sorry. But I just laughed out loud at this, "well, my whole FACE is cheek". That is the funniest thing I've heard all week.
And you are beautiful! Good luck, I'm sure others will have advice :)

Looking at your adorable cat make-up, I think you are putting blush on too large an area of your cheeks. When you blush naturally, or have been out in cold weather, where is your cheeks most red/pink naturally? That is where you should put your blush, if you want a natural look. Different people like their blushes differently, but you really cannot go wrong if you follow the natural colouring of your face. It is like contouring, and bronzning. It will look off if you put colour where you naturally have non, or where you would not expect a shadow of some sort.

I place my blush just below my upper cheekbone, beginning on the fleshiest part, not too close to the nose, not too low. Sort of 1/3 down between the upper cheekbone and the fold created when you smile, if that makes sense? Colour too low sort of drags my face down, colour too high makes my eyes look weird.

In your first picture, if you just move the blush up a little bit, I think it would look perfect. But in the end, it is a matter of personal taste, I think.

You have such a cute face!
Yes I can see how blush would be a challenge for you as there are no visible hollows under your cheekbones (which gives you your gorgeous cuteness) - I would love to be able to put some on you live and show you the different effects, I will have a go with photo technology , however I'm much better with a brush!
Stay tuned...

Hi WendyD,
I see your concern, but I have to agree with the other gals in that you are a cutie. I was looking at the cheeks of my kids (12 and 10) for the blush of youth and how it looks naturally. They have kind of largish cheeks, too, and they flush naturally kind of all over.

I would start with more natural colors similar to Maybe Baby and apply lightly for beginning. Try making a triangle with the center of your eye, the center of your nose and where the blush should go.

Thanks everyone for the advice! :)

I'll try experimenting with a more nude blush, and see how that goes.

@Lightsong: Cool, I'm looking forward to it. Thanks! :D

I just read what I wrote and it reads like I was suggesting you make a triangle with blush.

In looking at your pic, a good spot for blush is below the corner of your eye and kind of even with the top of the little fold of skin around the nostril. ( Man, that sounds weird, too.)

I tried something. Apologies for borrowing your pic a minute to mark the spot. I think the key is to start with a natural color....kind of a brownish peach so it will look more like the natural flush of skin. Once you get the blush where you like it most of the time, you could add in some pinks. Definitely use a dual fibered brush of some kind.

LOL Jen, no problem. I was hoping someone would alter the picture actually :)

I kind of invisioned your original suggestion as a triangle extending outwards, starting from the middle of the eye and nose, and going outwards :D

I once read that when you want to know where to place your blush, you should bend your head down for 30 seconds or so, so that you flush, and then place your blush there. Maybe it's worth a try?

I LOVE that this thread exists because my entire face is cheek, too. Which is awesome for contouring but weird for blush. I am excited to see more photos/recommendations.
