Do we need a lip plumper??

Post by karen » Thu Sep 24, 2009 12:16 am

So I was reading a thread about which lippies make your lips look bigger, and I'm wondering if we need a lip plumper? I haven't worked on one or anything, but should I put it in the "things to think about file"?

I like lip plumpers but I will say that my experience has been that a lot of them- especially the natural based ones- just don't work all that well.
I don't know how natural you could keep it and have the effectiveness people crave?

Karen, if you make it, I'll try it. :D I have tried and tried to find a lip plumper that actually works and have yet to find one that stands out. I would love if you would tinker and come up with something.

It depends whether you want to tackle the issue as a temporary cosmetic appearance or a longer-lasting skincare issue. I think I'd prefer to see a super-hydrating, collagen-boosting lip area cream. I've seen things like Gale Hayman Lip Lift which applies like a waxy balm and carries some collagen, but not very successfully. Other 'tinglers' using things like cinnamon and, is it clove(?) oil to slightly sting the lips causing a rush of blood to engorge the lip tissue - those can be uncomfortable and the effects too momentary to be worth enduring. Even as a clear gloss undercoat, it's not the best idea for the over-25's going into harsh, drying winter weather. :?

I've never seen a decent plumping product for application to the lips themselves but instead, real results are attainable by taking good care of the inch-or-so sized surrounding lip area tissue. A cream to support this skin and help diminish the textural and visual effects of smokers lines / ageing lines / dehydration crinkles and further afield to the slight slackening between the jowl / chin line and nasal folds, that would help significantly with the overall appearance.

Would have to day that this is not really my kinda thing - don't get me wrong, I'm no Angelina Jolie in the lip department but I find the products that make lips tingle in order to boost circulation (and therby the size of your pout) sorta uncomfortable :? - like when I get sauce on my lips after a messy bowl of my other half's spicy spaghetti

I'm with Cupcake in that I would much prefer a mega hydrating product - balm, cream, whatever - which would help reduce the appearance of fine lines and potentially encourage (or reduce depletion of) collagen.

As for fullness, I find that a nice big splodge of a VERY shiny clear liquid gloss in the centre of my lips creates the illusion of a more 'juicy' lip look....... so if you're making anything Karen, my vote would be for a shiny clear liquid gloss!!!

i agree with some of the others that i find plumping glosses pretty uncomfortable. i already have full lips though, so maybe if i really liked (and needed) the effects i would be more willing to put up with them. i too would say that a hydrating/anti-aging eye/lip product would be great...also a clear liquid gloss. i have been experimenting recently with making blush into lip gloss--by mixing with a clear gloss--and some of them are sooo pretty. (especially stardust, wow!)

I hear you all very loud and clear on the stinging ones...not going to happen from SN. I don't even want to keep that stuff in the shop...nothing wrong with it, but I'm just too clutzy/absent minded to even think about possessing something like that (especially in their concentrated forms).

Ok...I hadn't really thought too much about it- more along the lines of "hmmm...should I think about this". I found the active ingredient in City Lips which is ungodly expensive, not natural but not super synthetic either, and I have a supplier who's going to start stocking something in the plumping/remove lines but I'm not sure what the actives are quite yet. I'll think about it some more.

I don't care for them. I probably wouldn't buy one.

It just struck me that if you gelled a specifically hydrating and possibly collagen boosting serum, that would be a superb around-the-lips mini mask, not unlike the Gatineau Collagen Plumping Under Eye Compresses.

*whispers* ... trouble is, if you made a super-hydrating gel mask, all be it intended for occassional 'rescue' treatments and uber-expensive due to ingredients, you'd still have us screaming for it in bucket-loads
