Looking for a Lip Color that's a warm red stain

Post by EmilyAnne » Tue Sep 15, 2009 3:13 pm

First, I just want to say that I just got my first samples (climax, and lovelace blush) as well as my first lippie, Damsel and I love ALL of them. I'm definitely going to get the full sizes - I wore Climax one day and Lovelace the next and both days my husband complimented me and kept saying that there was something about my complexion that looked extra pretty the last couple of days. These blushes are so sheer yet vibrant, the perfect wash of color that looks glowy but not sparkly...amazing! And as for Damsel, again I love it! It looks like I'm wearing a little bit of clear gloss and my lips just happen to be naturally perfectly pigmented and youthfully pink.

Now I'm going back for some full size Climax and Lovelace, and I think I'll try the Stardust too from all of the awesome reviews, but I want to add a lippie that's sort of that slightly stained, MLBB look but with a warmer/peachier tone, possibly even a red w/ warm undertones but sheer too so it gives a wash of color instead of being opaque (if that makes sense :)

I've looked at Tender, Maiden, and Darling, but I just can't tell - I don't really want a nude lip, but more of a warm red wash of color - like Damsel but warm. That sort of "just bitten" look.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated - thanks!!

Tender is great, but I recommend Nectar--it's my favorite lippie and for me, everything that you are looking for (sheer but deeper color, and the best MLBB shade I've ever tried). I know Maiden is very popular too, but I haven't tried that one myself....

Thanks Packgal!

Is Nectar more of a brownish undertone?? I know it's supposed to be like Cliniques Black Honey which is a beautiful color that I love, and I'm hoping for something a bit more red and a bit brighter if possible.

Here's a link to Lipstick Queen's Medieval which I love the look of but definitely breaks the bank at $20 ouch!:

hey emilyanne,
to me, nectar isn't that brown, it's more of a neutral deeper red. i don't have clinique's black honey so i can't say if it is different :( sorry.
on my lips, nectar is very similar to the picture that you linked us to; maybe just a touch deeper.
when I wear tender, my lips just look more shiny; there is no real color change (it's very sheer and the color is very near to my natural lip color). nectar just gives them that extra depth and beautiful "oomph." i think darling and maiden are more pink/peachy than red.
i do have a vox page where i have swatched all the SN lippies that i have on my lips--it's www.testqueen.vox.com and you can see nectar, tender, and my natural lip color in natural light photos. i am actually trying to update it right now with 3 additional lippies (bloom, fearless, and a limited edition liquid gloss that karen gave out awhile ago called lola).
have you looked at sweetheart too? i remember jen and karen both recommending that one as well.
there are other reddish glosses (rare berry, reddy, hotblooded, jaybird) but i don't think those are quite what you are looking for...
i'm hoping jen or someone else will also chime in with their opinion...:) if course, my real opinion is that you should just buy all of them :) heh heh.

Woah, that soft red needs to go on the Fall collection wish list thread - that's so flattering and I can't think of another colour that's exactly the same (but good ideas from Packgal, who is making me now quite fancy Rare Berry myself). Good find!

Thanks so much for your help!

Those swatches are so helpful. I'm going to take your advice and try Nectar for sure and maybe check out sweetheart as well - Looking at the swatch it seems a little cool in undertone, but I also saw it on another post and it looked more cranberry which could be close to what I'm looking for. Judging from all the reviews and posts, it seems like vurtually all of the colors are beautiful and wearable so I feel confident that even if it's not an exact match to my dream color, I won't be disappointed. You can never have too many lipsticks/glosses/stains/tints! My biggest problem is that I like so many of them it's hard to decide which to try first :) I can already see that I'm going to get very addicted, very fast.

I'm so glad I found this site - I use EDM for my foundation and I'm very happy with it, but I was never quite as thrilled by their blushes and lip colors. And now that I've tried the SN stuff the EDM blushes/lips colors don't even compare. I just can't say enough how impressed I am with the blushes and the damsel lip glos :)

If you like Damsel, maybe think about trying Berry Nice. It's similar but a deeper berry but still sheer and wearable. There's a lot of swatches in Jen's swatch thread, incase you haven't found that yet. You can't go far wrong, really. And a wee tip - no-one has ever regretted buying Precious ;) 8-)

eta: oh!oh! Did you Lipstick Queen's "Black Tie Optional" lipstick? It's like the darkening version of SN Sparkle. MUST HAVE DUPE!!!

i realized what the medieval lipstick reminded me of--that cutie kahani's post about benetint on her blog. they look really similar to me...medieval is kind of in between benetint and nectar. i do believe a clone is in order!
(i also totally agree with cupcake about precious--and berry nice has been on my wishlist forever--i love the consistency of the sheer glosses with no shimmer; although the actual look of shimmer is my favorite).
black tie optional is definitely sweet...

edited to add: i didn't realize that kahani had medieval too! she has it swatched right next to benetint.

I'm obsessed with lip stains! I've tried almost every lip stain from the big companies -- prestige and drugstore. I love that clear, natural, just-bitten look.

Although Lipstick Queen's Medieval isn't a true stain, I've been lemming it so I would LOVE a dupe of it!
