Partial reviewer name disclosure?

Post by BeaT » Fri May 09, 2008 11:32 am

This is not a product wish but an SN-related wish nonetheless.

I had wanted to leave reviews for products, but when I discovered that it's mandatory to disclose my full name, I gave up.

I never make any personal information freely available online, lest it leads to unexpected and unwelcomed intrusion into my personal life. Though I don't mind being recognized as a lover of, say, Climax Blush by fellow SN shoppers, I'd not want any random person who happens to know my name and wants to dig a little deeper to discover such minute details about my personal life, even if the product's name isn't so provocative and is as plain yogurt as simply "Black Mascara"; I just don't want people to find anything about me online that I'd not share in a casual banter.

I may seem overly concerned with such things, but given the fuzz about the Facebook Beacon feature, I think there are definitely others who are as sensitive to such matters as I am. (I know how Beacon is different from the SN reviewer name disclosure, but an element of "mandatory disclosure" to non-preselected parties seems to be present in both.)

I hope that I don't sound too harsh here. It's just that I'm finding certain products I like have only a scant number of reviews and am hoping to contribute some positive input but at the same time don't want to lose control over my privacy for such small things.

I definitely see your point. It would be nice if we could update the template to either leave the last name off, or select a username for posting reviews. I am not sure how easily this can be done with the current template, but it is certainly worth a look.

Are you an employee of Karen's now, Jen? Must be my mistake; I always thought you were just a fan like the rest of us.

Yes, I am a part timer. First and foremost, I am a huge fan. Karen asked if I could help her out. I have been a SAHM for the last 10 years. It was a perfect fit for me to work from home for a company that I can support 100%.

I help out with whatever can be done from 300+ miles away- a little on the website and a few small projects. I've been doing it for a little over 2 months. So far I am pretty sure I have spent almost all my earnings at SN! ;) It has been the most fun!

It would be nice to be able to store a usertag as well as your account info separately. Since it's your account info, i don't know how intrical your real last name is. For instance, my revies are Samantha Elliott so I could type in "Samantha E." It has to be 2 characters so you need the . after the initial but i did just check and it will save that way... just a thought.

Jen- I noticed you were working on the site- I'm so happy for you!

I actually feel the same way as the original poster. I did post a review for Unblush and was surprised that my full name appeared. I really don't care that the MMU world knows I need this by the bucket or that I am truly a MMU nut but I would feel a little embarrassed about coworkers, neighbors, etc seeing this.

Good thing I did not review Lovelace or Climax blush first!!

I feel the same way too- I have my husband looking into it because from a privacy or safety standpoint I agree with all of you 100%. I'm that way about publishing my first name in the phone book- it's just something I don't do.

Has this been fixed yet? I tried to review my fave lipgloss Seedy and one of the blushes that has no reviews as yet, but I couldn't post without it using my real (full) name, and I'd rather not do that :-( (I couldn't figure out how to post using just my first name and initial unless I register again under the new name with a different email address, has anyone done that?)

I know you're all wishing for a system that will enable usertags (or something similar) and it sounds like Karen is looking into it. In the meantime, if you would like to leave a review without your entire name, you can use the following process to alter your account name without creating a brand new account:

After logging in
1. Click on "My Account"
2. In the "My Account" section of that page click on "view or change my account information"
3. change your account name to what you like. My name last name is "Elliott" so I change it to "E." Whatever you choose MUST be at least 2 characters long.

*Note: Changing the name on your account info WILL change the name on your primary address. (Mine to Samantha E.). If this is a concern for you, you CAN add a secondary address in your address book in the "My account" tab under "View or change entries in my address book". -OR-

*you can change the name on your account prior to leaving a review and then change it back prior to placing an order. I would only do this if you are concerned about your first or last name (whichever you chose to abbreviate) not appearing on your package. I have checked and altering your name will NOT change the name that is shown on any of your past reviews. If you would like to check, I have reviewed Sassy blush as "Samantha Elliott" and Rich Blush as "Samantha E." I've also reviewed Breathe shadow as "Xarata ..." Altering your name after posting a review will NOT change the name listed on your review.
