Any advice much appreciated. :)

Post by harpazo_hope » Wed Aug 12, 2009 8:10 pm

Hi, I'm new here.

I get so confused with skin tone; particularly the warm, cool, and neutral end of it. I think I suit gold best, but after reading some of the colors that are best for warm and cool skin tones I am really confused! Does that mean I am neutral? LOL!

I have never purchased from silk naturals yet, but my wish list is growing. I think I will be buying the geo collection for my birthday. Along with that I would like to try a finishing powder and maybe foundation. Oh, yeah! And the sleep in a jar. I do realize there are samples, but sometimes I just can't wait. :)

Any information or opinions would be appreciated! I'm really dumb at this.

The top picture is from last winter, and the bottom one is recent with no makeup and a tan/burn. Unfortunately they both were flash photos, and I don't know if that affected anything.

Hiya and welcome :) In the absence of our moderator and foundation-mixing genius, Jen, I'll try and help a bit. It's 2am here, so this is a simple answer, but I can try to help some more tomorrow unless anyone else turns up. You look like Buttery Gold would suit you. It's got a yellow-ish undertone, that's good for neutral to warm on pale / fair skins like yours (and mine) where there isn't a deep skin colouration. It's pretty forgiving. Your skin looks great, so if you're not wanting too heavy a coverage (you don't look like you need to cover up blemishes so much), then the original or medium coverage formulas will probably suit you better. The foundation is really easy to adjust to suit - I know it's a bit daunting at first but it's really easy to figure out. I'm guessing maybe 8-10 scoops of Ivory (the white, colourless foundation base) for every one scoop of colour (buttery gold). If that's not quite right, just add a little more white, or colour, and mix it again. (Something like a jar with a lid you can put the powder into and use like a shaker-blender is easy, everyone's got their own ways to do it).

For eyeshadows, the Geo Collection is a great way to do warm neutrals. It's a copy of Bobbi Brown's collection and those are so flattering. Here's a set of swatches of colours, including the Geo Collection named individually: http://www.silknaturals.com/callouts/sh ... tches.html It's quite out of date, in the sense that there have been a lot of new colours added to the range since then, but it'll show the ones you're asking about.

As for Finishing Powder, there's a lot of options. Do you want something to mattify and reduce oily shine, or just a simple 'finishing touch', or is your skin a little dry through the day? Do you want a hint of glow (Tempt Tryst or Liberty Glow, for a touch of extra but subtle glow)? Perfecting Powder is the best place to start if you're not sure.

Sleep in a Jar is great for concealing darkness around the eyes, especially under the eye and on the inner corner. I use the Extra Light Peach and I'm a little paler than you, so I reckon you'd get away with that or the Light Peach, or of course the yellow. Yellow is really useful for fair skins as its a good multi-tasker. Yellow neutralises slight redness, if you ever have problems with that.

... and a real secret star product of the SN line is the lippies, in particular the Black Label lippy. If you're interested, try the Pure (clear) as it's colourless and unscented, a lovely nourishing, moisturising balm that's unmissable.

Have fun, and ask if there's any advice you need. 8-)

For your skin tone, I recommend using either the Warm or Buttery Gold as well. Use either the original or medium coverage- or mix both together.

Perfecting Powder- Tempt Tryst all the way! That would look great on you. It's a bit glowy, but by no means over the top and it's beautiful. I use it every day, without fail.

For blush, you can always try Climax, or even Cupid Glow- that's beautiful, too.

Thanks... :D I now have a few more things added to my wish list. :)

I wish it were easier to find pictures of people's faces wearing these products, especially the Tempt Tryst.

I thought I'd add a few more photos, because I'm pretty sure none of them are 100% true to life.

*sorry...deleted.* :)

I still have plenty of time to make up my mind. I love the anticipation.

Ooop! Then I forget to answer the questions about the finishing powders! :)

What caught my eye is the bit about minimizing pores. I have usually had dry skin, but lately I've been a tad oily. I think it's the medication I'm on and hope it will be temporary because I don't like oily hair.

Hi,

I think you have gotten pretty good color advice so far. If you do find that the Warm Gold and Buttery Gold are not quite right, I would give Ebony a shot (about 1 scoop color:8 Ivory for that one). Some of your pics show a slight golden yellow tone while the others show you as a pretty neutral. Pictures are tricky to read because lighting is everything. OK...I'm back. I can't decide on a perfecting powder.

The description for blur has me interested...but I often have tight, dry skin and I'm concerned it will not work for me if my skin goes back to dry.

Tempt Tryst was recommended, but I'm concerned about the "glow" though the picture looks like a good color for me. Can anyone point me to a picture of someone wearing it?

Is the glow in Tempt Tryst any different than the illumination description for the perfecting powder? Do they both have the same degree of glow/illumination?

Lately my skin has been a little oily but only noticeable when I wear makeup. I want to minimize large pores and keep my face from shining too much.

I'm hopelessly indecisive! :)

Thanks!

In my opinion, the Tempt Tryst is only slightly 'glowier' than the other perfecting powders. You do also have to take that with a grain of salt because I notice every slight variation in texture size of the particles. I am a science nerd who has in the past worked with powders in a lab, so my eye is kind of trained that way. If you are unsure, I would try a sample.

OK...thank. Sorry to drag this thread so long...but I came across some information that I thought you as a science nerd can answer.

When trying to find out more about silica powders, I read that silica is considered a carcinogen. I also read that cosmetic grade spherical silica has not been shown to be a problem, and that the crystallized silica that is a proven carcinogen is considered dangerous when inhaled in large amounts or over prolonged periods of time.

Reading about the differences between spherical and crystallized silica made me feel better, but I was hoping you would have more information to calm my fears. I found SN to avoid dangerous ingredients. :)

ETA Also...would Vanilla be a good highlight color to add to the geo collection?
