How quickly do they expire? I don't think mine have but you never know.

I think it may depend on the individual product, I have had some for years that are still good

So do they just get an off smell when they go bad?

I have only had it happen to Menage, it started smelling kind of like crayons, not bad or rancid, so I have no idea if that constitutes going bad or not.

Some do last longer than others. The oils used are usually pretty stable to last at least a year. I have some that I have been using for three years, and others that I only get a year out of (but I think those colors that lasted less than a year have mostly been discontinued). I know there are some pigments that we now avoid in lip products because it seemed they made the oils go off more quickly.
Yes, the smell tends to go a little off.....kind of like crayons or old cooking oil. They won't really hurt you if you do use them beyond that point. I usually can't get past the smell as I am scent sensitive.
If you have one that did not last at least a year, let us know.

Same for me. I get different times out of each. I've noticed the darker colors tend to be the fastest agers- they get a tacky tar-like consistency when they go off and are pretty unuseable at that point. I have some of the flavored ones that smell and behave the same as they did years ago and i have some that the oils went off but i use anyway as they won't hurt you. i do periodically cut small portions (like an eigth of an inch) of the tops of my lippies to help stave off bacteria. I'd say the average lippie in my house lasts ~3 years. If it's still available, I'll replace it but if it's a discontinued color that i love, i'll use it past the oils going off. I've tossed a lot of dark wine colors though...
oh, the balms tend to go off quickly for me too. They don't usually last more than a year for me, some not even that long before the flavors go off and the consistency hardens up.
eta: i've purchased pretty much every lippie SN has ever made (which is a couple hundred or more i believe. it's definitely over 100) and some twice over so it's rare for me to actually finish a tube. I don't think most people have that problem.

I have tons too, but not as many as you

I have never finished one, lol.
But I just love collecting them and looking at all the pretty colors, and having all the choices

Thanks all I checked my lippies and a few smelled a bit off but I cut a little off the ends and they're better now.

I don't have a very good sense of smell, so I've always relied on my service dog to tell me when things are off.
If she declines to take a lippie and run, it's probably bad and goes in the trash. She has stolen quite a few lippies, I find the tubes outside and a dog with stained paws.
