I have the hardest times with reds being too pink or too orange.

Me too. Reds can be tricky.
Which shades have you tried, and with what result?

I really like Symphony, it's a soft red that stays neutral and it has a gentle gold shimmer through it which I find makes it even more flattering to wear. That's my 'make it forever' colour. I've recently received Tango which is also an excellent neutral. It's more pigmented and gives a richer, more bold statement lip but it's not too heavy for very fair skin. It's got a slight natural sheen from the oils in the formula so it has the stay-put feel of a lipstick but without that optical effect of a dark opaque colour making lips appear smaller, thanks to the slight gloss. I've had no sign of either colour becoming either pink or orange on me and would heartily recommend both.

If it helps, I've also tried Bitten (certainly a warmer colour), Dame (a flattering favourite but it's a berry pink-red with golden shimmer), Lola (not a red, more of a slightly brick-brown leaning darkened plum), Sultry (brick-red, slightly warm but muted enough to be near neutral), Sweetheart (more of a plum than a red) and my beloved Stiletto (pure red micro-fine shimmer in a clear gel).

Of these, I could happily live in Stiletto, Symphony and Dame forever.

Yes, it would help to know what didn't work for you and why, so we can better recommend. I can personally wear almost all of the older red reds from SN except for Cassis and Symphony (and I haven't tried Tango and Stiletto yet).

You could start with Hot Blooded - definitely no pink or orange and it's pretty neutral with nice coverage.

I love Symphony and Blaze, but am looking for something less sheer. These are the only 2 SN reds I have tried. I have several failed red lipsticks from other places in the drawer..... Somehow all the other SN ones I purchased have ended up on other people and have never gotten around to re-ordering for myself!

Based on this, I think you will like Hot Blooded. Not lipstick but more pigmented than those above, and has similar coloring and not overly matte.

Yes, Hot Blooded. You may also do well with Sultry. And if you are looking for a fearless full-on red, try Cayenne.
A good neutral red liner can add depth to any red that works for you, and even correct one that comes close on its own. If you can wear off-label products, I recommend L'Oreal Colour Riche liner in Always Red--that is, until Karen comes out with her own liners ;)
