new to makeup.. need help with everything with makeup!

Post by serti102 » Tue May 10, 2011 4:44 am

hey! please help :)
I am a guy trying makeup for the first time to cover up some acne scarring! I am really confused on what to even buy lol.. I've been reading about this topic so I am guessing I need a foundation, powder, and concealer?

-I am the butterfly color (asian skin tone).. I am thinking I need the heavy kit since I need coverage to cover the scarring.. some are pitted and some are just dark brownish color..

-does the heavy kit come with the foundation, powder, and concealer. How long would they last if it does ( because then I will need to buy extra of that)?
-is the foundation and concealer liquid? I am reading I need something liquid heavy stuff to cover properly..

please help me in picking out everything I would need for this haha (please please please be specific also.. i.e i have no clue what the difference is between the mineral and creme in the concealer tab) .. if you think I need other things too then please let me know! Thanks for your help!

Makeup Basics
Concealer and Foundation
Concealer:
There are 2 types of concealers offered by SN, cream concealer and powder concealer. For heavy coverage, I find it best to use a cream concealer and put a powder concealer over top of that. I do my concealing first. I am a pale yellow/olive foundation (but not asian) and I use yellow cream concealer topped with extra light peach powder concealer for my super dark undereye circles. Concealers work on a basic premise of complimentary colors on the color wheel: yellow combats purple(like bruises), orange/peach combats blue(like circles), and green combats red(like acne).

Since you're mostly trying to lighten dark brown scarring (i think?) I think tinting a heavy foundation to a shade a little lighter than your skintone will work best for the powder setting. Based on your skin tone, I would conceal with a yellow cream concealer first, and top with a heavy powder foundation tinted lighter than your real skin.

Foundation:
Foundation can be tricky. SN's foundation is a mix-your-own-perfect-shade and comes with instructions on how to do that. What you need to decide is how you intend to apply it. For the heaviest coverage, I recommend applying it "wet" in one of 2 ways: with a hydrosol or a moisturizer.

Hydrosol: hydrosol is mostly a fancy word for setting spray. It can be just water or any combination of great nutrients and liquid- but you spray it. With hydrosols I like to mist a cosmetic sponge, dip it into some minerals and apply. You can also mist a makeup brush (the synthetic flattop is the heaviest coverage brush) swirl and apply.

Moisturizer: You can also mix you minerals with your favorite moisturizer. However, they tend to separate, so it's best to do the mixing on a daily basis, by putting a dollop of moisturizer in your hand, topping with minerals, rubbing your hands together and then applying.

*With either "wet" method, i like to top with a layer of dry powder and then mist my face lightly with a hydrosol to "set" it. *Also, for your concealer powder, I recommended heavy foundation powder. For mixing powder foundation with something wet, the multi-purpose foundation will work better for you as it's designed for this purpose.

Skincare:
I know you didn't ask about skincare, but I think it's a pretty valid route to helping with your scarring situation. Several products in the skincare category target acne, and others target skin texture and tone. The microdermabrasion gel and the super serum are both great products for smoothing skin and evening out tone.

Mineral foundation is a powdered foundation- so you don't need a separate powder. For extra coverage with your concealer, it is a good idea to have both a creamy concealer and a powdered concealer.

You might be surprised, but not all asians are a buttery yellow skintone, and especially when you're trying to hide something, it's important to match your skintone correctly. Since we're going to try and make one that works for foundation, and one lighter that works as a concealer, I recommend getting a sample kit of all purpose foundation(which comes with all the colors you need for tinting and a jar for mixing in) and an extra sample of heavy foundation base (which comes with a jar for mixing in). How do I find these? Face>>>Mineral Foundation>>>Samples (The kit is on the left, and the heavy base is on the right)

The kit comes with powdered concealer that you can custom shade for your skintone. For concealer, I recommend the yellow cream concealer (Face>>>Concealers and Correctors>>>Yellow Cream Concealer). The foundation is powdered, but you can apply it in a liquid way as I described in the Mineral Basics section of this reply. You can also use it as the powder. The concealer I am recommended is a cream concealer- it's not powdered. I do think that a lot of people suffering from acne problems use liquids almost like spackle to fill in the uneven texture of their skin. You can address the texture issue without globbing on a huge amount of makeup.

*I, personally, do not suffer from severe acne, but several of the ladies on this forum do. If you create a post specifically about "Products for acne" they can set you up with a great skin routine that will help to smooth scarring, even out your skintone, and prevent future acne flare-ups without damaging your skin. A lot of them use the green tea and aloe serum as well as AHA or BHA and they can tell you more about those products.

Welcome :)

Sam's advice is great.

Awhile back I made a Youtube video showing how I mix my foundation. The quality isn't the best but maybe it can help you get started?
