Infinity scarves! Also called mobius scarves. I am obsessed with them!
I have to admit....I adore scarves....I just love, love them, I think they are so stylish and pretty and fashionable....but to be truly honest, I have a tough time pulling them off. I never seem to tie them right, or twist them right, or they hang funny and look kinda dorky. But infinity scarves, OMG.....genius! They are just one very long scarf.....sewn together at the ends, so you can just put it around your neck, and wear it oh, sooooo many ways.....and best of all...totally effortless. It doesn't fall off, or trail on the ground. My Muz just gave me a gorgeous light cotton voile one....tie dyed light greens and teals, shot with silver lurex threads....stunning. Totally amps up a green tank top and jeans. Great for the insanely hot weather we have been having lately. Then there are the wonderful thick, chunky knit ones for winter. You can wrap them around your neck and pull it up around your ears to keep them warm. I was looking on etsy yesterday and saw a plaid flannel one, and thought *how brilliant is that?*.
I am thinking that is has got to be waaaaay easy to make some of these. I may trot over to walmart in the next few days and take a look in their remnents department. All I would bascially need is a nice soft peice of material maybe 5 feet long and a foot and a half wide. I don't really sew, but I do handsew pants hems, so I think I could manage the one seam I would need to make this. I will let you guys know.
So....any feelings one way or another?

That's brilliant!!! I never really thought about scarves other than as something to keep my neck warm. I rejoice every Spring when I no longer HAVE to wear them, but the mobius ones look like a lot of fun! I've knit a few by accident (if you're knitting in the round, and twist it, you get a mobius). In theory- they'd be very simple to make if you had the right fabric. You need something that isn't going to fray, and that looks good on both sides. Most fabric is 45" wide- so maybe 2 strips sewn together would be better unless you bought 2 yards of fabric and cut it the other way. If you fall in love with a piece that looks like it's going to fray- cut it with pinking sheers, or grab a bottle of Fray Check.

The other thing you could think about is hitting a dollar store or the Salvation Army for scarves. It's probably cheaper, and they're already finished on the sides.

There is a twist in the mobius- essentially when you make the seam you're putting the front side of one end against the back of the other end, and then stitching it together. Fleece could be fun- it doesn't fray and would be nice and warm for Winter!

Karen...what a great idea about getting some scarves from thrift stores. They would be way cheap, and I love the idea about re-purposing.
I had also thought about fleece, too.
I could get some Steelers fabric and make Richard one!
My daughter and I are going to *try* to learn to knit this winter. I have a feeling it may be a huge struggle, as we are both very stubborn, both left-handed, and tend to get frustrated very easily. We shall see. I wish we could import JenW for a few weeks.....

mmmmm.....pretty! It sorta looks like neapolitan ice cream! let us know if you find the blue one!

I actually found it right after I posted earlier and have been working on it since. I swear I looked where it was before, but this time it was magically there. Go figure!

@ChristineLynnP- your scarf is gorgeous! I'll bet the blue one is going to be great as well...one of these years I have to get better at crochet.

@Laurie- if I can knit anyone can! There's only 2 stitches- knit, and purl- once you master those, you can do anything. I'm self-taught, and I learned from an old book, and videos on http://www.knittinghelp.com/. Dish cloths are super easy to knit, and they're really fantastic! Plus if you mess it up, it's still usable. All you really need to get started is a pair of size 7 needles, and a skein of Sugar N' Cream cotton yarn- I've seen both at the dollar store, but even if you have to go to a craft store, they're both pretty inexpensive. The Salvation Army usually has some yarn and needles too. Cast on 30 stitches, knit until it's a square and then bind it off. If you get stumped we'll help, or seriously, just walk out in public with it. Another knitter will spot you, and help you out. We're all on a mission to make more knitters

Another knitter/crocheter here. I totally recommend the knitting site Karen linked to. It is truly what taught me to knit about 8 years ago. For crochet, I just learned from videos on youtube last summer and have not stopped doing it, since. I do find crochet a little easier, but that may just be me.

Thanks The blue one will take me a while. It's really, really long, and I'm doing single crochet, so I'm not sure what i was thinking. I decide to toss a few rows of treble throughout both for variety and to build it up quicker, but it's still really slow going. So don't look for a pic any time soon, but when it's done I will.

I made a cell phone case for my old phone in the blue yarns using an afghan stitch. The weave itself is really nice but I didn't join too well unfortunately. That's fixable though I'm sure. It's cool because Eric did a chainmaille handle for me, and where it joins on each side is a blue chainmaille flower. It's the most unique cell phone case ever, unfortuantely sized to my old phone. I should take a pic of that one too, but that doesn't belong in this scarf thread

I'm working on learning to increase/descrease and work in rounds. I've started on the rounds, one step at a time I guess. My next project will be a beanie for Eric, in black, of course. I'm looking forward to moving on to using nicer yarns now that I'm getting this down.
