Lip Primer

Post by Oxana124 » Tue Feb 02, 2010 2:10 pm

It was mentioned to me in another thread that I should try a lip primer to conteract the natural pigmentation of my lips and have a clean slate so to speak that would allow the true color of the lip product I am wearing to show through. I think a product like this would be a wonderful idea, as colors never show up on my lips like they do if I swatch them on my hand, and having a "clean slate" before I apply my lip color would be really useful. Not to mention the other benefits of a primer, like making the lip color last longer. I just thought I'd throw this idea out there.
Thanks!

I also wanted to ask, perhaps the eye primer can be used on the lips? I know not all ingredients are lip safe, so if the eye primer is good for the lips, then perhaps I can try using that.

I love the idea- and someone asked about it before. The issue I had when I played with it a while back is when you make something that's pretty much all natural (including our eye shadow primer- I did try that, but it didn't really work either) is that it's just like a regular lippie- think along the lines of XXX. The issue becomes when you put something on top of it instead of lightening your lip color it mixes with the other color product and lightens that instead of your lips.

I was at the LaPraire counter at Sak's in NYC and they put a powder on my lips to cancel-out my natural pigment. That worked rather well..it felt pretty terrible, but it looked fantastic- and I'm guessing it felt terrible because their makeup wasn't anything to write home about. You could try a dusting of foundation to see how that works.

what about the formula of the new creamy concealers? Any chance that would work OK? I guess what you would need is something not too moisturising, but pretty pigmented. Maybe you could just mix some foundation with a tiny bit of lip balm (so it sticks) and try that?
I would think that giving your lips a good exfoliate beforehand would help too, as anything like that would probably be kind of drying, and accentuate any flakes/lines etc.

I've seen ranges like Dermablend which use a setting powder to seal a cream-based opaque base - covers tattoos, scar marks etc - and it works well on skin, but lip skin is so different - and it's dampened through saliva, constantly lips rubbing together, etc. It might work for short term wear, say photographic purposes, but not for all day wear.

What about something like this?

I have not tried it, but it sounds pretty good, and like it wouldn't mix with the lip color applied over it.

Oxana, have you thought about a nude lip liner?

I have, the only natural lip liner I've found (forget the brand, but its from Sephora) is pretty pricey, like the same price as that Origins primer. So if I was able to spend that kind of money on one little item, I might as well just get that primer. Unless Karen wants to make a natural lip liner :)

Or just an ultra matte, ultra pigmented nude lippy?

I have really dry lips, and applying powder on them would probably crack them up badly. Someone had earlier recommended ELF's lip primer but guess it's not exactly natural. UD and Aromaleigh also stock lip primers but I'm not sure if they are natural.

I agree with what Karen's said -- the lip concealer/primer would also lighten the color of the lip sticks, so you don't get something that allows you to apply lipstickst that are true to color. But it's good if you are after the uber pale look.

Nevertheless, I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that Karen could formulate something that works :D Or maybe a lip color much lighter than XXX & with the same opacity?

I'm tempted to get a Japanese brand lip concealer (Candy Doll, Canmake, or Makemania), but I don't think I want to deal with comparison shopping, ebay sellers, extra handling charges and international shipping. Overall, I think I would have to pay at least $20 for a small lipgloss tube of a Japanese drugstore brand - I'm a total cheapo. I'll get as last resort. I don't know if any brand in the US offers this kind of product (besides MAC).

I've seen few swatches of SN's XXX, but I'm afraid it looks too dark and brown. And the other neutral colors look more on the pink side. I'm still wanting to get a milky Japanese lip gloss look, and I don't think I can get it without concealing my pigmented lips first. I can't do normal concealer or foundation over lips..this tends to exaggerate my lip creases or make my lips dry and pasty (even with lip balm or vaseline).

So I too request a nice beige-ish lip concealer that has the same moisturizing effects as the other SN lip products please, but isn't too pink or too brown...and could possibly look good on it's own (if that's not too much to ask..heheh). Thank you very much.
