New Mixer-Need Help

Post by egyptomaniac » Sat May 31, 2008 11:43 pm

Hey all!

I'm new to Silk Naturals, and was hoping some expericanced mixers could help me find the right combo to mix my foundation. I'm really excited to try it!
I just got my samples in the mail today, and have already went back and ordered a full size of the Love Lure, and Tempt Tryst, and the Baby Doll blush, but the foundation mixing has me at a loss. I'm so bad with judging colors. The whole undertone/overtone color depth thing has me confused.
Maybe someone could direct me with a recipe? These are the current foundations that work for me (I hope its ok to list other companies??):

Everyday Minerals- Olive Medium/Golden Medium
Dreamworld- Theia
Buff'd-Saffron
Joppa- Kakhi or Grecian Goddess
Alima-Warm 4 or Golden 5

Thanks in advanced!

Jen is more the expert at this than me but I will tell you what I think! I'm sure Jen will be along shortly.
Since it appears you are about a medium warm/golden skin tone, you should probably start with the warm gold or buttery gold base. Warm gold has more yellow than Ebony, and Buttery Gold is the very yellow base. I would guess you're probably going to want about 1 scoop base to 4 scoops of white. That's about a medium level to me. If that seems a little light, just back off to 1:3. You can do a mixture of some of both bases if you want, but like Jen says it's going to be easier to mix with one base color. You may prefer Buttery Gold if you're used to fairly yellow foundations (EM is the only one you listed that I'm fairly familiar with) but you can easily try both Warm Gold and Buttery Gold and see which color you prefer. I find it easiest to pack and level the scoops well (use the inside of the baggie) so I know exactly what mix I'm using. Shake it well in the jar with the sifter off and then apply the sifter after you've mixed it. You'll get several applications out of one mixture so you can tell how it works for you.
I am about a medium/light medium neutral, and so far I prefer the Ebony base (although, I'm starting to get more tan, so it remains to be seen if the Warm Gold will be better for that.) I use about 1 ebony to 4 white at the moment, although I probably could start going a little darker now since I've gotten some sun. My skin tone is fairly forgiving. I've mixed several batches of this and I've never come up with anything yet that I couldn't wear. I started with the Warm Gold and discovered that I like Ebony better so far (but like I said, I have a fair dose of neutral in my skin.)
HTH some!! :)

hihi!

i think u're most likely 5white : 2 buttery gold, but its safer to start with 5 white : 1 buttery gold and add another scoop of buttery gold if it was too white. hth =)

cos i'm edm med beige, so my sn was warm gold, since you're olives and goldens in other company mostly, seems buttery gold is more likely.

being open and adventurous to makeup color is one tiny gesture, but one ginormous step to being more receptive to the beauty life is bringing onto you.

never try, never know x) have fun!

Everyone is getting so good at this! I have to agree that you will most likely fall in the warm category. I would start about where they recommended. One thing that is a little tricky is that the Ebony base is a bit lighter than the other two and will not require as much white to achieve the same depth. For you, I am thinking a Warm Gold Mix of 1 Warm Gold to 5 White for starters. The powders need to be thoroughly mixed and need to sit on your skin a bit to blend in for the most accurate test. It is possible that you will actually be a bit lighter than that, but it is easy to add white if needed. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Ok. Thanks gals! I think I'll try to mix one of each... one of the warm and one of the buttery gold and then do some testing this next week while I'm off work.

So I tried a mix today, and I love it! 6 white, 1 warm, 2 buttery. I couldn't decide between the two, so I just used both! You can do that, can't you? Anyway, it looks great! And it held up so nicly all day! I don't think I''m even going to try another combo, I'm so happy with what I've got! I've gotta order a sample kit for my mom now! I really think she'd like it!

You can do that. I use a touch of Warm Gold with the Ebony.

It's easier than people think - and I'm delighted you were able to mix a a good match for yourself! In truth, SN is the only real match I've gotten. The closest I've come in pre-mixed foundations was 'sorta-kinda, but not quite'. So I'm very happy to wear something that actually matches! Plus, if you tan a bit in the summer, you can always adjust your foundation instead of having to go out and buy another one.

You absolutely can use whatever you feel works. Also, you can change it tomorrow if you feel it needs a little tweak. So glad you like it.

For me the foundation was a great find. I am very pale in the winter and quite tan in the summer, and always changing in between. I love its changeability and finish.
