I have a lot of redness to cover. Ive used EDM Ivory with adequate results, but never felt it was perfect... Any help appreciated! Photo by daylit window..
Edited to add second picture, maybe a bit more accurate... indirect daylight pic
Before I even read your post I was thinking one of two ways...either a Warm Gold and Ebony blend or Olive. Since you mentioned redness, I am going with suggesting Olive. I think you will need about 1 scoop color to about 12 white. Start at 10 white and then add a few from there.

If the above ends up too green...we can add in some Ebony and more white to the mix. I do think you are slightly on the cool side of neutral. Olive might overcorrect for redness.

Thanks JenW... I will order my sample kit now... :)
Never would have guessed olive, but maybe that's why everything I usually pick is off!

Hello JenW, again :P I was wondering if you could give me a good recipe for foundation for me, and also, if possible, what skin care regime from SN I should use. I have light-medium skin, with plenty of redness. I do burn pretty easy. I have some acne scarring :( And of course, I do get a few pimples. If you need some more info please let me know, thanks! I tried to post a pic, but the site is saying it's too big.

I am going to pm you with an email address to send a pic.

Hi! I'd love a recommendation from Jen the color sage and goddess!

I have always thought of my undertones as quite warm, and a makeup artist once exclaimed to me... 'you're orange!'. Prior to wearing mineral makeup, I never wore foundation of any kind and had fabulously clear adolescent skin. However I have used concealers for a long time--mostly under my eyes as I have congenitally very dark circles only exacerbated by sleep deprivation (ssh, don't tell!)--but have always found it difficult to match concealers which usually looked very ashy on my skin.

Uncannily, or perhaps even causally, I wrecked havoc on my skin when I started to pay attention to skin care about 4 summers go--namely trying to wear sunscreens every day and ending up with a disastrous mess and severe contact dermatitis. Ever since 'the sunscreens incident' I have been under the care of several dermotologists, yet my skin has remained hyper sensitive with profound and pervasive redness that may never go away. Here's to hoping... And ever since that time--and originally the Drs' suggestion as an alternative to SS and also for aesthetic reasons-- I have been wearing store-bought mineral makeup, but have never been entirely satisfied with the color selection. Also, my neck is irritation free and much sallower and lighter than my chest, which tends to pick up color from the sun and also has some red-casted irritation as well, so I'm never sure whether to aim 'matching' to my neck or my chest, but generally aim for a tone closer to my chest sans redness.

Enter Silk Naturals! I had guessed that I would find my best batch in Buttery Gold, so purchased this in excess along with the starter kit and also a sample sachet of the medium coverage base. However after going outside to mix shades, I came inside and discovered that I vastly prefer the Original base to the Medium Coverage, as the latter I found difficult to blend, blotchy, and generally too heavy. But the good news is that the coverage level of the Original is perfect for me! And blends beautifully :) And Perfecting Powder is quite a stunner of a product!

After trying out several different ratios on my arm outside, I concluded that 1.5 warm gold : 1.5 buttery gold : 12 Original Ivory was my match. But when I took the color I mixed inside and applied it, I found that it looks muddy/dirty on, especially under incandescent light.... Would really like to have some advice on where to go from here.

Also, I would love it if I could make the finish (currently semi-matte?) just slightly more glowy even than the glow that dusting with PP adds. I have samples of Glow, Tempt Tryst, and Love Lure; which and how would you recommend I try these? Try more finishing powder, or mix some into the foundation directly? I am aiming for something between dewy and semi-matte, certainly not shiny, perhaps what I am describing is satin finish? Not quite sure about terminology...

Anyway, I am sorry that I have so few pics to post, as most are taken indoors and I think I am wearing mineral foundation in all of them; I'm ashamed to admit that I never leave the house without it these last few years due to the redness from irritation :( and also for some sun protection. So I picked a melange of pics, and think I look like I have a very different skintone in all of them!

Really looking forward to your help, thanks in advance!

I completely forgot to add in recommendations for skincare for your skintype. If your skin is on the dry side, I recommend Apricot Cleansing Oil....if it is more oily, I recommend the KISS cleanser. Some oilier girls still love the Apricot Cleansing Oil. If you are like me, you might need one in the colder months and the other in the warmer. For a hydrating serum, it is hard to go wrong with Green Tea and Aloe. If you get on the drier side, try Oatmeal. For treatments, this is more age based...I would probably start with the Vitamin C Peptide. Then for a moisturizer, you can try Hemp or even the Lavendar or Olive Oil.

Cleanse AM and PM: Apricot Cleansing Oil or KISS depending on dryness.
Exfoliate: Every few days.....but add this in a little later once you are sure the other products are working. It is not a good idea to start too many new things at once. Since you have a few breakouts, BHA Toner is probably the exfoliant of choice for you.
Treat AM and PM: Serums go here....Vitamin C Peptide and then Green Tea and Aloe.
Moisturize: Hemp, Lavendar, or Olive Oil.

vamponaspringday-

I think the ratio that you posted sounds a little dark. If I work out the ratio it is 3 total scoops color (Warm Gold and Buttery Gold are both of a similar depth) to 12 white...or 1:4. I would have put you in a little lighter shade...like 1:5 or 6. When the numbers are small.....one scoop makes quite a difference. I think from the pics I would have put you in Warm Gold. If you think it needs some Buttery, too, you are probably right. Which side of your arm did you match to? For a revised ratio, I would do 1 Buttery: 1 Warm : 10-12 Original Ivory

To add the deweyness you seek, you might consider subbing some of the Original Ivory for Glow (2 or 3 scoops of the 12 will probably be enough). Also, you could add in some Tempt Tryst. We have many that add the finishers right into the foundation mix. I sometimes put a shake of my foundation mix with a shake of finisher right in my swirly bowl and mix as I load my brush.

Let us know how it goes, and if you have further quesitons!

Vamponaspringday,

I've had that muddy/dirty problem with warm gold...it looks good if I don't look at it in the light! I'm sure Jen is right and the mix needs to be a little lighter, mineral foundations seem to darken a bit after about 5 minutes, especially on oily skin! If when lightening you lose some of the yellow you need, you can always try some yellow booster! :D It adds yellow without adding anymore brown...brilliant really. Personally, I need more orange so I add a scoop or two of Palace (that's a blush) since SN doesn't have an orange booster yet and I can't imagine very many people needing it! I haven't come across very many people with visible orange/peach tones like mine... ;)

I add 2-3 scoops of Glow into my mix to make it more glowy and dewy looking. But I use medium coverage usually, so you might want to start with just 2, it can get glowy quick as a few of us have unintentionally found out.

Hi Jen! Just curious what foundation mix you would suggest for the other girl in vamponaspringday's picture above? She is exactly my summer color now. btw, vamponaspringday, you are very pretty!

Thanks!
