I use a regular, none-serrated sharp, kitchen knife around the edge, very carefully. That's how I give people samples.
EDIT: I dunno if that's enough direction, haha. So I every carefully work the knife between the lid and the jar, then do a like lever action once it's in between to pop the top off. Sometimes I have to work around like half the lid, so go back and forth to jimmy it in between and then do the seesaw/lever thing up to pop it off.
I think I'd maim myself with tweezers.
