Overwhelmed and Confused

Post by Dawsie » Sun Jan 18, 2009 11:47 am

I am an need of help with choosing a foundation kit. I don't which foundation kit is right for me as I have a problem with seeing colors - undertones in particular. My problem is I can distinguish primary colors but cannot see the undertones. As an example, I can see the color brown but can't tell if it's reddish or greenish - I only see light, dark or medium brown.

Hair - Blonde
Eyes - Blue/grey
Skin - burn first, then only slightly tan. Red cheeks from broken capillaries.

Someone once told me that the reason I have such trouble finding a foundation is match is that I have yellow (olive) undertones and red/pink overtones. I'm hoping someone knows what this means.

As a reference, Lumiere in Flawless Light/Med beige is a close match.

I would like to start with the medium coverage.

Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

I really recommend samples of all the colors first, especially if you are uncertain of your skintone. However, you are pretty similar to me as I have a 'close' match in the same at Lumiere. I usually wear some blend of Peach, Ebony, and Warm Gold. Do you have jars? If you do, I recommend a full size pouch of Medium Coverage Ivory, a scoop, and the "all 5 sample color pack". If you don't have jars, you will want a few (you could also order a few of the Medium Coverage Ivory Sample Kits in this case which give you a jar and scoop in each.) Really you are just looking for something that makes you look good! It may also take a few tries, but at least you will have everything you need to get a great match. I am honestly betting on Warm Gold. I think the pink overtones can be a ruddiness that you don't necessarily want match your foundation to.

In Ebony you will fall in the 1:8 (one scoop Ebony to 8 scoops Ivory) range
In Warm Gold 1:12 range
In Peach 1:16 or more range

That's great advice. I'd encourage you to give this a try. I made the same mistake until I came here - I was colour-matching my very pale skin to my pink flushes weather-beaten skin. I gave JenW a close match about another foundation I used which wasn't quite right and in one go, she suggested a mix that worked absolute wonders. As it turns out, I'm very slightly yellow! Who knew!! :D

The mixing seems daunting but the ladies here will take great care of you - and for quality and how comfortable the foundation is to wear, I bet you'll never look back once you try this. Good luck.

Do you think my order will be shipped before next weekend? I'm leaving for a 4 week business trip and will have tons of time to experiment :D

If you are in the continental US, you should get them this week. I typically order during the weekend and get my package Wednesday of the following week (shipping from NY to Utah.) Karen and her team ship VERY quickly! ;)

Sounds like me. The undertone v. overtone basically (IMO) means that you have a base color all over your body (that would be the yellow/olive tone) and then different parts of your body pick up pinkier tones due to sun exposure, etc (the pinky/peachy overtone). I generally match my undertone because it continues down my neck, chest, and body.

I use a blend of buttery and warm but i have a hunch you're going to be a warm gold or a mix of warm gold and ebony (peachy neutral). Good luck and let us know how it goes!

I already like it here - everyone is so supportive! I'm sure I'll need more help once I start mixing and blending and will post my results. I'm so excited about this line and can't wait to get started. Thanks again for answering my questions.
