Foundation Color Help

Post by kendie » Wed Nov 19, 2008 3:02 am

I'm excited to try your foundation! After a year of sampling mmu, I'd almost given up due to color probs (I'm a bit of a chameleon). I hope that being able to mix my colors to find the correct shade will help. Before I order, I thought I should ask for some color suggestions as I have a hard tone to match. Some say I'm olive, others cool, and some say warm.

Here's a breakdown: I have quite dark brown hair w/auburn highlights, hazel green eyes, and light to medium skin. I tan fairly easily, though I often burn first if I overdo the sun. I tend to look better in cool make-up colors (pinkish blushes, jewel tones for eyes) and look best in winter colors (black, white, darker pastel hues, and vibrant jewel tones). I found an old MAC foundation which is NC30 (I think your guide says buttery gold may match best w/that shade) and it was ok. With other mmu brands, the cools worked best but can sometimes have a slight orange cast. Unfortunately, other shades tend to be a bit orange or ashy. I also have some slight redness around the nose/chin area due to dry skin and retin-a.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
Aurora

Wow, you sound just like me! I have had a trouble finding MMU, or MU for that matter, that works for my coloring, but SN is the closest I`ve found.
It is very forgiving, so you can get away with many blends, but WG seems to work for many, as well as Ebony. I use Buttery, and it is a bit to yellow, but as long as I lightly dust it on, it seems to work. Try ordering the sample pack with all the foundations, and get extra Ivory. You will have the color forever, and should only need to but more Ivory for a long while. For spesifics, Im sure Jen or Karen will see this shortly. If you post a picture, they are really good at matching from that.

I am thinking you will be an Ebony or Ebony/Warm Gold blend. Without knowing more about your skin depth, I can't really recommend any more. I would also sample Peach. I know you said you have some slight redness. It is easy to miss a bit of red in your skintone when you have red pigmentation issues from irritation, dryness, rosacea, etc.

I do know exactly what you mean about some mineral makeup turning orangey. I had a similar problem before SN. Generally, if it is too ashy looking, it is too light; if it is too orangey, it is too dark. You always need to judge the color at least a half hour after putting it on. Still, it is more than that, too. You have to get the undertone close to start with.

Thank you both for your help. I'll def get samples of each. I love the concept of mixing your own shade!

Jen, I'm not sure what you mean by "depth-" undertones, perhaps? I included two pics if that helps. I'm a bit tan in both, but they're the best I could find.

Again, thanks for the help!

The pics help greatly. By depth I mean how dark you are. (I should have just asked are you in the fair, medium, or dark range!) I think you will end up in the 1 scoop color to about 4 scoops Ivory since you are tanner in the pics than you are currently. You might even be 5 scoops Ivory, but start at 4.
