Ratios for "True" Coverage Level

How many scoops of color and how many Ivory Base scoops does it take to give the "best" true to level (i.e. Medium or Heavy) coverage. Obviously, I understand that the Ivory component is the coverage level, and the more Ivory, the more true to coverage level, but what ratio was that developed with to make the foundation work as the desired level?

Starlight, I am SO glad you asked! You're so right, Kahani! I've been wearing SN for a year & I wear any formula (coverage-wise), but I am not a pale gal so this is a REALLY good question. My personal coverage level would be nowhere near someone's who's much paler than I. I hang around in a REALLY smart crowd!!!

I don't know how much I can help, but I'll try.

I'm 1:16 ratio and I use medium coverage. I do tend to find that this coverage is a bit much for me on this ratio (previously 1:11). I think something around 8-11 ratio would be perfect on medium coverage.

Should warn you though I like a more natural looking coverage, then a heavier one. I think in the end it will all come down to a person preference. But I personally think 11 scoops would be the one to aim for.

Does it make a difference - say you add 1 scoop of your colour to say 10 of Ivory, as an example. If you change the ivory base from Original to Medium or Heavy, do those heavier bases require a stronger ratio of colour to get the same results? I'm thinking that a denser stronger white in Heavy will take more colour than the light-weight Original formula to get the same results? (I haven't received mine yet, so am just curious)

So if in Original you need 1:10, would you need 1:9 in Medium and 1:8 in Heavy, to compensate for the stronger white pigment of Ivory??

This is pretty close!!! There is some component of coverage in the color bases just in what they are. I think they are closer to Medium than Original as I find them to cover much more on their own than the Original Ivory. I think the only coverage level that might have a slight change in coverage would be Heavy, but only when you get up into a 1:2 or 1:1, and then it would still be slight. If you need more color than Ivory it would definitely have an affect on coverage in the Heavy. You can always layer a bit more foundation on. Likewise, if you had a high color concentration with the Original, you might not have as light of coverage, but it would be slight and you could just use less.

Sorry, Jen, I am still confused.

Could you go back to my original post and answer from that? Perhaps Karen needs to put her 2 cents in, since she is the one that developed the foundation and the Ivory coverage bases. ???

For example, I am a 1 :4-5 base and I don't feel like I get "medium" coverage with this. Perhaps Karen could give a ratio, or range of, that was "intended" to give medium and heavy coverages.

I hope Karen will chime in on this one. If you want specific numbers, she will have to be the one to tell us. There is some coverage level built into the color base, and it is greater than our Original Ivory, which puts it closer to medium coverage itself.

What I am trying to say, is that for Medium Coverage there really is not much difference regardless of the ratio you use. If you add medium coverage to medium coverage you get medium coverage.

I know Karen formulates her foundations to photograph well. As a result they are missing the high concentrations of the ingredients typically associated with heavier coverage foundations because they add a weird white cast to photos. She formulates toward a natural texture as well. Her way of achieveing medium coverage is different than other companies. My best suggestion is for you to try the Heavy Coverage if you are not satisfied with the coverage you get from the Medium. I personally find the Medium a bit heavy for me, so in my mind, the Medium is right on target.
