Newbie needs help with colour choices!

Post by bestbeauty » Thu Feb 23, 2012 1:14 pm

Hello everyone!
I'm new and loving everything on the SN site that I click on right now!

I have a long, long, oh so very long wish list and need to get this down to a few eye shadows, a blush, a finishing powder and whatever else you think is a MUST HAVE SN product.

I'm in the UK so am going to make a $30.00 (or there abouts) order, so also wondered if anyone in the UK has had probs with the customs limits, especially as I see they have reduced the limit.

For the colours I guess you need to know that I have:
- warmish dark blonde hair- level 7.0 in L'oreal home hair colours.
- pale steel blue eyes with a dark steel rim around the iris
- I am using warm gold 1:9 (original base 7, glow 2).
- dry skin type, sometimes this is just dehydrated rather than crepey dry
- I have naturally pinky cheeks but a yellowy neck, so never know if I am warm or cool...

Does this sound like you? What have you found which looks great? What looks pants?

I would be so grateful to all those would be kind enough to divulge their expertise.
One Item that I will be ordering is brimstone, like mac shale, that egerandi so kindly swatched for me. Happy birthday to you for yesterday!!

Thanks everyone! :D

All the best

I come from a country that do not have blonde or colored eyes girls by nature. Although I now live in europe, I still really cannot well differentiate various shades of blondes, so I will suggest only what I know quite flattering for most people of various colors, judging from your skin tone. So, eyeshadows suggestion will be limited. :D

Afterglow/Satisfied (blush)
Poppy (blush)
Petal (blush)
Flirt (blush)
Lady (blush)
Maybe Baby (blush)
Amuse (cream blush)
Tickled (cream blush)
Crinoline (glow)

Blushberry (ALG)
Pretty Please (ALG)
Nice Tan (ALG)
Caramel (KS)
Maiden (KS)
Darling (KS)
Bloom (KS)
Aria (BL)
Coy (liquid gloss)

Colt
Quartzite
...and I don't know what else.....

Hi Bestbeauty

First up, customs. The limit is now £15 which is $23.60. Worth checking a good currency exchange site for up to date rates (I like xe.com/ucc) I'd stick to $23 or less. If you want to order $30's worth, I'd recommend splitting it into two $15 orders and adding a note in the comments box that you're combining orders and requesting the freebie eyeshadow. Susan is an absolute diamond for being helpful about things like that.

I ordered the Valentines collection - a $25.25 value declared on the package. My fault, the discount made it $23.and something but it came off the shipping cost rather than the cost declared. Two weeks later, the package turned up but the Mount Pleasant customs boys had their grubby paws on it and wanted another £11.71 / $18.41 to release it to me, so it went straight back to SN unfortunately. Again, Susan and Karen were immensely helpful and understanding. I love 'em for their customer care.

Unless you can afford the charges, do not take chances. Even a few penny's worth over the limit and they will seize the package and impose a fee.

As for colours, you've got the same colouring as me. Feel free to send a note and we can chat. I have *ahem* most of SN's colours, or at least had them (nicked or rehomed by friends with big appealing eyes and promises of faithfully returning them).

Brimstone is good and Fire eyeshadow is a must own to go with it. It also gives a transforming layer to other eyeshadows the like of which I'd never seen before. As does Opal.

Frckls has made some popular choices but having tried those, from the blushes, I liked Petal and Lady for being a complimentary and flattering tone for the skin. Stardust is another sure winner, it adds a 'lit from within' ethereal glow. I'd disagree with the lippy suggestions as most of those looked washed out or jarred against skin tone as 'fake' especially as brown based lip colours or that coral-watermelon tone (blushberry, best friend, etc) looks artificial against the skin tone. I'd recommend picking one Kisser Slicker as a starting point but as with all products, colour choice is entirely a personal preference. As long as you like what you wear and project the confidence it gives you, you can carry off anything.

Eyeshadows is another long conversation! Happy to help, but I'd suggest starting with the swatch thread and coming back with some ideas for colours that catch your eye.

As for skincare, perhaps try a sample of green tea and aloe serum or either the rose or oatmeal serums. I find that they make a noticeable difference and significant improvement and they're one of the strongest recommended products here.

Enough for now, have fun with the choices.

Hi,
I saw your other post looking for foundation color help. I was a yellow/orange in prescriptives too (you can still get their products from their online site...free shipping in the US, not sure about overseas). I have dark brown eyes, but other than that our coloring/hair color is similar (my skin is a bit darker).
As for blushes Maybe Baby or Bronze Beauty would look nice, not a lot of pink.
My lips are darker than yours, so many colors aren't true on me. PeachyKeen is my new favorite...natural pop of color, but doesn't scream makeup. Hot Blooded is a very wearable reddish color (not a in your face color like Bombshell...also love). Blushberry is a bit too cool for me, but I've seen it look good on girls with warmth in their skin...turns very pink on my lips. Darling is a favorite, peachy/pink. I just thought of Fanfare, easy peachy wash of color.
I can't help you with your eyes, but Adorn seems to be a favorite for many different eye colors (I love it).
The Ultimate Luxury Powder is really nice. If you have nice skin you could even get away with just using that or maybe Tempy Tryst...golden perfecting powder...or a mix.
Have fun!!! SN is addictive, but in a good way!!

Hi frckles, Cupcake and JenK,

Firstly thank you all so much for taking time out to give me such useful information. :D

I will take a careful look through your recommendations.

I think, Cupcake that I will do as you suggest and do a bigger order of $46.00 in two shipments of $23.00 or £15.00, wow the customs level is so low! I feel like I need to think of a way round it. I did think perhaps it would be possible to send a self addressed stamped envelope to SN, but not sure how I could buy the US postage from the UK... :?: I will pm you sometime over the weekend.

JenK, I have looked at retrying prescriptives here (you can buy what stock is left, online here too) and was going to go down that route when I stumbled upon SN and now think that it's the best thing since sliced bread, not least because I am a fan of minerals, and have been for about 6 years.
Yes a super hobby for me, not sure that I will ever have a stash as big as Xarata's !!
In my quest for knowledge, I have been looking at lots of different forums.... I love it all, it's so me!
I am slowly turning into an SN geek.

Anyway you guys have a great weekend.
