Lip stain question

Post by cclee00 » Sun Jan 22, 2012 11:22 pm

So I'm in the process of building (okay, it's built - edited [with some adding!] is a better word) a large order with a large number of lippies, as I already have a ton of eyeshadow and I love the few SN lippies I have. I only decided in the last couple days that I should throw in a couple of lipstains, since I finally hunted down some swatches of them. Vamp is a definite keeper - I love a deep plummy wine red. However, I was wondering about Dixie vs Trixie and Gigi vs Chloe. I've seen swatches of all, but I've seen different swatches of the same ones and they looked different (arm swatches all).

For Dixie/Trixie, I want pretty much a straight orange/deep peach shade. I can layer something on top if I want to go more coral or red. Which might be better? I was leaning toward Trixie, but Oxana's hand swatch looked a little more pinky coral, and Jennifae's arm swatch and frckls' lip swatch both make Dixie look like a nice bright orange.

For Gigi/Chloe, I'm looking for the softer one. They're both described as cool light pink. Karen said one layer of Gigi was like Damsel, which would be great, but the swatch I saw of Chloe looked lighter than the swatch of Gigi. What are the differences between them and which do you ladies prefer? I would rather not have a neon pink lip - I'm ordering Showstopper for that. ;)

So with the orange, which is brighter and more true orange/peach? And with the pink, I want the opposite - which is a little softer and less neon? Does anyone have any suggestions or swatches? I do realize YMMV with lip pigmentation.

It is hard to know which one you should pick. Skintone and depth as well as lip color do come into play with a lip stain. If your skintone is closer to Oxana, go with her swatches, but realize that your lip color will still change the color somewhat. Remeber that Oxana is pretty fair and neutral/cool toned and Jennifae and frkls have more medium skintone with golden and olive tones. I have done a few swatches but am more neutral/warm toned in the light range.

I think if you have deep lip color, you might want to stick with Gigi and Dixie as they are both more intense colors and will actually show more. The lighter colors don't show up as well on deeper skin tones, even though they still show. If I chose just based on the colors you would like them to end up, I would say Trixie and Chloe. If I chose based on the intensities you want, Dixie and Chloe......

My advice would be to get Dixie AND COY. If I want a bright, stark (pun unintended Karen!) orange, I wear Dixie alone with a balm or a clear gloss. If I want softer orange/coral, I layer Coy on top of Dixie. Dixie can be toned down as well applying it with wet q-tip. HTH!

My skin tone is very very pale with yellow undertones(no pink in my skin at all). So I think sometimes that makes swatches look warmer than they would look on a person with more of a pink toned skin. And also because of the paleness, bright colors look brighter, bold colors look bolder, etc.

Trixie is an orange, pretty much the exact color of a carrot. What it will look like on you depends on the natural color of your lips. I do not own Dixie, so I can't compare. But Dixie is described as a warm red on the SN site, while Trixie is described as "a bold, yellowish orange".
So I would say get Trixie, this way you can wear it alone for a more carrot-orange shade, or layer it with something reddish to make it more of a coral.

Chloe is lighter than Gigi. Gigi is a lot brighter and bolder, I could not pull it off as an everyday look.
Chloe however is wearable for everyday. So I think you should go with Chloe since you are already getting Showstopper for a bold color.

Sorry don't mean to make it even more confusing on what to order, but just wanted to echo that your lips pigmentation/chemistry will play a factor too. Chloe on me, is bright! Like bright poppy pink. And this coming from someone with medium-tan skin. I think of Chloe as the warm version of Gigi :) I don't own Gigi, but comparing swatches of Gigi to the Chloe that I have, Chloe is definitely the less neon of the two

Okay thanks! That was really helpful because tonal differences can get confusing.

I'm pretty sure I have yellow undertones to my skin - I mixed my foundation using just a dab of Buttery Gold and it worked great. Oxana, I think our skintones match - super pale with yellow undertones, so I like looking at your lip swatches! Btw, is a yellow undertone cool or warm? I can never remember.

Because I am super pale (which I should have mentioned), I think I will go with Trixie and Chloe. Even if they're not what I was looking for, I'll still love them. After all, it's SN. :)

Thanks!

Glad to help.
Buttery Gold was what I used too and it matched me.
Yellow is warm, pink is cool.
Another way to check I think is warm toned people's veins that you can see through the skin will look green(because blue+yellow=green) and cool toned people's veins will look blue.
I think Trixie and Chloe are good choices, I hope you like them :)

Not to sound weird but having read so many forum threads on here I've seen a lot of your posts Oxana and they really are helpful.

I have read that about the veins, and it confuses me! I'm pretty sure I have yellow undertones - but my veins look blue. Maybe because I'm so pale? (Most foundations are too dark or tan-ish unless I buy high-end or mineral. I wouldn't say I glow in the dark, but maybe I do. ;) ) I usually try for a neutral or yellow undertoned foundation and other than that I ignore all warm/cool undertone awareness or coordination, except for a preference for a deep cool red lipstick instead of warm. ;)

Thanks :) Glad I could be helpful.
Maybe the vein thing is not always true for everyone, especially because sometimes veins if different area can look different colors, it probably does depend of how much color you have overall. I just know that a lot of companies will make the lightest shade of foundation pink toned, and if I wear that it makes my face look so pink.
I also feel like cool toned lipsticks look better on me :)
