Best match to reproduce another colour..

Post by rabidmoon » Sat Oct 22, 2011 2:37 pm

Hi all,

I'm an ongoing devotee of several indie brands, and one favourite among them is Silk Naturals, particularly for lip products and skincare, and some shadows. When it comes to foundation, I've been using Meow for about a year, though, and while I have a good match in their foundation in terms of colour, TEXTURE has become an issue.....thing is, in the summer, Frisky Korat (Pampered Puss) was generally a perfect match and easy to use - but in the WINTERS - our climate plus the flat's heating means my skin is much drier, more prone to redness and the foundation's texture just isn't cutting it anymore. Since I've just run out, it's the perfect time to switch! I don't need heavy coverage, but I'd prefer the formula to be less flyaway.

(I should specify that Frisky Korat is quite a superb match, but having tested Frisky Abyssinian too, I think something right between them would be virtually undetectable. Korat can look a tiny bit too dull in winter, but Abyssinian just a tad too white - somewhere in between would be perfect.)

After reading thru all the comments, a little torn on if Buttery Gold or Warm Gold is a better place to start? Or even perhaps a bit of both would be best? I tend to think I have pretty neutral tones in my skin but I prefer some yellow in my foundations because they even out any redness in my skin - which I do get, as it's somewhat sensitive. (Green looks too grey, so I rely on yellow for counteracting red - I'm pretty sure the olive bases wouldn't work for this reason.)

I've ordered the sample kit with the "all-purpose" base because I think that may solve the texture issue - but I'm curious what people feel will be the best colour base to replicate what I've been using, and if I'm on target with the all-purpose base for texture as well?

(As a sidenote - I just want to rave about Kingfisher - that shadow is just...too pretty for words.....foiled, it's flippin' amazing with Nebula or Rogue. Wore it today with Nebula and Vanilla and it's just really, really pretty. "Blackened teals" the world over should just give up and retire, Kingfisher wins for depth of colour AND texture.)

I think Warm Gold will probably be too pink for you, as it is more a warm peachy tone. Buttery Gold or Olive will be your best bets...Olive might need Yellow Booster, so I would definitely try Buttery Gold first. Frisky is in the light range. I am guessing 1 scoop Buttery Gold:7-9 All Purpose. 1 scoop Olive: 12-15 All Purpose.

Yeah, I was a Frisky Abyssinian once upon a time and it was three scoops of the Buttery Gold to one little bag of Ivory, if I remember correctly.

p.s. worth sampling Tempt Tryst as a must-own and also Date Bait which does wonders for the complexion when feeling a little sallow. ;)

@Jen: Thank you! Interesting - I won't rule olive out then.....we'll see how it goes when they arrive. Buttery gold sounds like it may be the place to start. :) Appreciate the help.

@Cupcake: Thanks! I'll check them out. I love to use glow-type products as highlights!

I used Frisky Abyssinian and I do a mix of buttery gold and the white medium base.

Korat and Abyssiniam (frisky mixed w/ naughty samples) combined was my match. I just started using All-Purpose and really like it. I started out mixing the white base (about 10 scoops) w/ a scoop of Olive. It looked pretty good, but missing something... yellow. I added about a 1/2 scoop of Buttery Gold, it looked great. After wearing for awhile it was a bit too dark, I think I added about 2 more scoops of white. I'm not sure if I needed the Olive or not, next time I will start w/ the Buttery Gold and see what happens. I really thought Olive was all I needed. I like the All-Purpose way better than any of Meow's formulas...very natural and covers better for me. Never gets dry, chaulky, oily or that FLAT matte look on me.

Mixing is way easier than I thought it would be!

Hey ladies, thanks for all your input and comments!

I agree on Meow's texture, plus neither Korat nor Aby were 100% perfect matches - I think I feel right in-between, but what was really pushing me away from using it was the texture. I don't always need much coverage but I like having the ability to control it. It seems SN is a bit superior in this - at least, the all-purpose seems to give quite good coverage so I can work with a light hand and get the look I wanted. :)

I got the kit today and started with the buttery gold and sufficient base to match, which was very close - but I also wasn't convinced that only buttery gold would do it - so I added in a tiny half-scoop of olive + 2 more scoops of base which seems to have nailed it, though I'm going to go outside and see how it gets on with my skin over the next couple of hours.

My skin isn't playing the "red face" game today, so it's a good test of the base colour though not perhaps the best indication of how well it will cover red.

(If nothing else perhaps I'll mix myself up a tweaked version with yellow for those times/spots, but right now, I think this may be a good first go, if the colour holds and doesn't darken.)

Immediate impressions of the texture are good, so fingers crossed! :)
