Oh, I love knitting! I'm stuck at the level of low intermediate, but I don't mind :) I knit scarves now, but I used to be able to do hats and sweaters with color patterns in high school and college (very irregular looking ones, but heck, who cares). My grandma taught me, and every time I knit, it reminds me of her :)
It's fun and relaxing, and can be very impressive - gorgeous scarf, ChristineLynnP! Crocheting is not something I picked up, other than the occasional bookmark. I bought a few patterns, but I don't know how to read them, even with youtube, the terminology is a bit foreign to me. It's ok though, no pressure :D

Good luck, Laurie!

I love scarves like these :) they're my favourite. I call them circle scarves... ha ha, creative. I have made them one sewing big bits of jersey together at the end, and one by knitting a tube. I like it when they're long enough to go around your neck twice, and big enough to make lots of volume. You've inspired me to go to the fabric store and see what I can find to make more... yay!

Hi Zus,welcome!
I like the idea of jersey....lot of different colors. I'm thinking I could pick up a few tshirts from the dollar tree and see what I could come up with!

@sarahand jen...thanks for the compliment, ladies!

I don't knit but it isn't for lack of trying, both my grandmother and my mother were avid knitters and tried on more than one occasion to teach me. Unfortunately, I am a natural born left hander who got switched to a right hander in school. My problem is I can purl just fine since the way the yarn crosses is different ( if I remember right) but I can't get the knit stitch right no matter how hard I try. I do crochet, my neighbor taught me, and told me I was the only person she knew who held the yarn like a left hander, but crochet using my right hand, but if it worked for me, she wouldn't try to switch me. I haven't done much more than afghans, but did make a sweater when I was in college, and some baby booties and a small cap for one of my staff members when she was preg. I think I will have to get my hook out and start again this fall, who knows I may even try knitting again. Thanks for being a source of inspiration Laurie.

I'm a natural-born leftie too! I can remember being scolded when I was a kid that I was using my wrong hand :roll: and being made to switch until I started doing it the "right" way. I count money most of my day (wish it was my own! lol) but I do it leftie-style. Sometimes I've wondered if I'd write neater if I re-taught myself to do it leftie, since I was born that way. I can relate to how hard it is sometimes because you naturally gravitate to doing a lot of new things in the left-hand style but ultimately have to switch to right.

@Hollis...You are welcome!!!

this is really interesting about the left-handed stuff. I am a natural born left-handed person that does everything EXCEPT write with my RIGHT hand. I went to Catholic School in the late 60s/early 70s, and I remember the nun in first grade rapping my knuckles with a ruler trying to get me to write the correct....i.e......less sinister(the church's term) way. However, they didn't know my mom! She came in there with her heals tapping, and her eyes blazing and told that nun under no circumstances was she EVER to try that crap again!
So, I got to write the way I wanted to. But everything else, it just feels more natural doing it right-handed....so I suspect that will be how I knit.
My daughter, though....she is a straight lefty.....so we are gonna have big fun!

The interesting thing is if I taught myself to do it, I usually will do it left handed. If someone taught me I do it right handed, and I can do somethings with either hand . The other thing is that I often will do procedures from either side of a bed, even though it would be backwards for most people, I just use my right hand , but perform the task on the side of a bed that a (L) hander would need. Belive me this is very valuable in the medical field.!!!

I might have to by a teach your self to knit book and try the directions for (L) handers and see what happens.

I actually just bought a new one today! I love all kinds of scarves. Having a mom from Pakistan is great, every time she visits my aunt she comes home with all kids of shawls, dupattas, in so many prints and textures and colors! I love them all.
I just bought a kind of brown-taupe one with little pom poms around each side. It's quite light. I have another thick knitted black one. I like it because it doesn't even require a hat when it's cold, just wrap the scarf around my head, one loop around the neck, and the rest can kinda hang down and look cute!

ooh, this thread is making me want to find my camera charger and take pictures of my huge scarf collection. (huge because most of it is 'borrowed' from my dear mama.. hehe)
