Crumbly Lip Products?

Post by zeebs » Thu Jul 22, 2010 12:13 pm

If my lip products are crumbly, does it mean they're expired? Have I maltreated them? What's up with this?

I've never had a crumbly SN lippie- and i've kept lippies past their dates too... hmmmmm. Are they getting dried out/are the caps not getting snapped on all the way? Did any of them get melted and recooled?

Every once in awhile i get a lippie with an air bubble in the tube and that creates an irregular edge that can catch and break off/crumble (instead of making a nice smooth dome it has "sharp" edges). Sometimes I cut off the portion with the bubble and sometimes i just deal.

Is it just tube lippies or are your liquids doing it too? Is it just one formula or does it seem to not discriminate?

Sometimes if I keep a lippy in my pocket then it gets all soft and the top bit gets crumbly, but if I cut the top part off then it goes back to normal (I usually don't bother though, like Sam I just deal with it, lol).

I've had this happen with some of the older SN lippies I have (like Gold Blush, my first SN lippie). I suspect it's because they've traveled around more than my newer acquisitions, so they've been through far too many "melting and recooling" cycles. Lippies from other brands do it too when they've melted and recooled.

This is what I get for living in places with wicked summer temps!

It's just the solid tubes and the original formula and vegan formulas are equally prone to it. I think you may be right about heating and cooling tho, as the temps have been really wacked out here lately, not to mention my house is air conditioned according to whim rather than according to outside temperature.

For me it's when they've heated up in my pocket, and they start to crumble a bit. I think it's the hole in the middle that does it. There's a very thin stick in each tube that the turning mechanism rides on, and it creates a small hole in the middle of each tube. My best advice is to keep them in your purse. It keeps them more intact, and fresher a bit longer. I use an Altoids tin to hold a few of them.

How long can you expect them to last before going bad?

I generally say about a year- but I have some that are much older than that and they're still fresh.
