Different packaging for moisturizers

Post by Oryx » Fri May 21, 2010 10:19 pm

I received the jojoba moisturizer less than a month ago, and already I can't get much out with the pump because the gel texture keeps the product from sinking to the bottom of the container as it is used. Because the neck of the bottle is so narrow, it will be hard to get the rest out.

It would be great if the gel moisturizers could be packaged in a shorter bottle with a wider neck (a bigger size wouldn't hurt either). Having it in a jar would be great, but there would probably be hygiene issues with that.

Has anyone else had this issue? What do you do to get the product off the sides of the bottle?

Generally speaking, i turn bottles over and smack them around and when that stops working i add a little water to what's left and shake.

Hah, I do the same thing Xarata does! I'm used to doing it with other things like conditioner and aloe vera gel so I guess I don't think much about it.

I like the pumps because I have less fear of contamination if I don't use them up right away, and the only other packaging I could think of would be a squeeze tube, which would require the smack and shake ritual too... But a shorter bottle with a wider neck would work, in theory. Might be hard to find for purchase though.

I have the same problem and I have felt like I was wasting product because of not being able to get it out. I will have to try the smack and shake approach.

I like the current packaging because:
-I can recycle the bottles (my town won't take any plastic that doesn't have a neck, so I have to throw sour cream containers and e/s containers in the trash :( )
-the pump keeps them sanitary (thus helping them last longer)

I don't like the current packaging because:
-sometimes the wand of the pump is too long for the bottle so it develops a kink in shipping and then when I get it and cut the wand (a messy procedure unto itself, and not that sanitary either) it still doesn't work right cause the kink never really leaves so the pump is dysfunctional for the entire life of the bottle.
-I have to thwack the bottle to get the stuff out at the end, just like everyone else.

I am wondering if a softer, squeezable bottle (same shape as the current one) would be available and recyclable? I also have no idea if it's as safe as what's currently used in terms of leaching into the product. Or maybe just a thinner bottle that could be cut open.

I noticed that as I used the Jojoba Moisturiser during the winter, as it emptied, it became harder to get the product out of the packaging. Maybe due to the cold, the moisturiser would cling to the inner walls of the bottle rather than sliding down to the base where it gets pumped from. That meant that as I pressed the top, it would splutter, even when it was still maybe 1/3rd full. It's only a minor inconvenience. A good whack to get the moisturiser down to the base (like slapping a ketchup bottle!) or standing it in some hot water to loosen the moisturiser from the inner bottle wall, that's all the was needed.

I'd love one of these fancy airless pumps, but that would probably not be cost efficient. I'd still much prefer the current packaging rather than changing to a jar just for hygiene reasons.

How about a squeeze tube, as in toothpaste? You can usually get most of the product out of those. I'm not sure if they can be recycled though.

I also got a kink in the wand, and at first I thought the pumping mechanism was defective as nothing was coming up. It did eventually start working.

The the smack and shake rules)))
But I also like jars. As for hygiene I use a clean spoon each time I need some treatment. And keep my cosmetics in the fridge. It seems to be ok.
