Eyeshadow Primer?

Post by zeebs » Thu May 20, 2010 2:13 am

I know that there is already a thread on this (maybe I even started one  ), but apparently the words "eyeshadow" and "primer" are too common to use as search terms on the boards, so.... here we go again.

Sorry guys. If somebody wants to post a link referring me to the right place, that's cool too.

But anyway, I've used UDPP (didn't care much for the texture), BE (loved it, but it's sooo expensive), Boots No. 7 (just okay), and Too Faced shadow insurance (my favorite value for the price). I know that all of those products have scary-sounding ingredients in them, and I would like to try the SN primer.

But i'm kind of afraid it won't work as well as the other ones and that I might end up wasting $9 on it.

Can you guys weigh in on whether you use SN primer, how you apply it, and how it compares to those other products? TIA.

I haven't used those primers (they all have chemicals I avoid) but I have used the SN primer and a few other natural-ish primers. It's a sticky sort of primer, not like the silicon based ones that dry to a smooth surface. It is tinted so it gives a whitish cast to the lid, which is fine if you are applying shadow over it (although maybe not if you have very tan or coloured skin). My eyelids aren't oily, and I don't get any creasing with the SN primer (I do without primer), and it definitely makes the shadows apply more vibrantly. It is the best of the more natural primers I have tried.
Hope that makes sense, I am tired and in a hurry, lol!

I use SN's eye fix primer, but haven't really tried other eyeshadow primers (i've used some different gel based ones for foiling, but that's about it). You use a very tiny amount (dab a fingertip on the surface and apply, blending out a thin layer) and, provided i don't rub my eyes throughout the day, my shadow lasts through a work day (8 hours) without creasing and minimal fading. I also like that it helps mask a scar i have on my eyebrow. I like that it covers up the darkness of my eyelids and keeps the color of my shadow true longer. Some shadows can look completely different on this whiter/paler base than on my natural skincolor which in some cases is like having twice as many shadows.

It creates a nice smooth base for color to adhere to and appear more true/vibrant while making your look last a lot longer and avoids creasing. That's really all i ask of it.

I like the SN primer, but, for me, it does not work as well as the BE primer. Because the BE primer is so expensive, I save it for special events when I really want my eye make-up to stay put for as long as possible. The SN primer is fine for everyday use, but I do see creasing much sooner than with the BE primer.

The SN primer did not work for me unfortunately because it creased. I have used UDPP and TFSI, as well as the ELF Mineral Primer and all of these work to prevent the creasing. I have tried bucket loads of natural primers out there and unfortunately have not found one that worked. What I did discover is that liquid primers that have to be in tubes and such tend to work pretty well for me, but anything that is more solid like things in jars do not work. The only natural liquid eye primer I have found is one from Fyrinnae, it worked better than all the other natural ones, but still not as well as the non-natural ones. It lasted about 5 hours before creasing started, which is pretty good as all the other natural ones creased almost immediately. The non-natural ones last all day long though, like 14 hours or more without creasing.

I use the SN primer almost every time I wear eye shadow but I've never used a primer before, so I can't tell you how it compares to others. It only takes a tiny bit to cover my lids; I've had it for a couple of months, and I haven't even made a dent in the pot. My lids are a bit darker than the rest of my skin, but if I apply it to my hand, it's only a bit lighter than my skin colour, so I just try to fade it out well and it's good because it also covers some darker, blue veins I have on my lid (or rather, it makes my ghost skin a little less transparent ;) ).
The only time it creases for me is if I do a light wash and line my eyes with a darker colour, then by the end of the day I get dark in my crease too... so if I don't want to do that, I just don't use the primer.

I can't do without the SN eye primer, but I don't think that I use it the way it's intended. For me, it's like Tipp-ex / page white-out for the skin :D I used it over my eye lid, especially the inner corner. Just dabbed with a fingertip. I use a small brush to dab just a little on the point of the inner and outer corners of my eyes. That's a tip I got from a make-up artist and it really does freshen up the face and take the look of 'lack of sleep' away.

So, with 'white-out' over my eye lids, I apply my foundation. On really bad days, I apply SIAJ extra light peach fluffed over the primer. That gives a perfectly set, perfectly 'blank canvas' foundation to start to apply eye make up to.

It's also brilliant as a concealer primer, same method. Cover with foundation, or for really stubborn blemishes, add a little pearly powder first to the tacky primer to reflect light away (diminishing the darkness of the blemish) and top with foundation. Bullet-proof coverage! 8-)

I like the sn primer just as well as the tfsi. They work the same on me. The sn one is a bit light though. I just apply it with my finger.

It sort of depends...if you have very oil lids where only something like UDPP will do- then stick with UDPP. Ours is built more for less oily skin where a regular primer would be drying.

The other thing you can try is the new creamy concealers. In theory it's about the same as our primer, but my skin is so dry I'm not a good test subject for it. I also love MLH's suggestion of the green tea and aloe serum.

I can tell you, as someone who has tried the primer, it doesn't work as well on my oily eyelids. I'm mid-30s, oily skin, very rare breakouts (now).
