Recs for Dry Skin

Post by JannyGirl » Tue Dec 22, 2009 6:25 pm

I am new to the forum and SN and am compiling my order for foundation and lippies, which I hope to place very soon. :D I have a couple of questions....

For reference, in EDM I mixed Intensive and Original Glo (more Original Glo) and this was a pretty nice mix for me coverage wise and appearance. I like a bit of glow but don't want to glow in the dark! ;) I would like recs for finishing powders or whatever that might provide this if the regular SN foundie doesn't. I did notice the Ultimate Luxury powder and wondered what this is like and how it might be used? I am 54 so anything that diminishes fine lines is great, although overall my skin is in good shape...most folks think I am much younger than I am. :D

Also, Sleep in a Jar ~ is it creamy or powdery? How do you know whether to get peach or yellow?

Suggestions are welcome.

Thanks so much!

~Jan :)

I can't speak to the rest of it, but honestly the only thing I have ordered (I haven't ordered the foundation yet, just eye shadows, skin products, lip products) that I can't use is the sleep in a jar. My skin is too dry. I can't get it to not look powdery and/or cakey. I'm sad about that because it works for many others.

Thank you, Silverfern! Much appreciated! :)

We do have a glow base that can be mixed in to foundation to achieve the level of glow you like. The Perfecting Powders and foundation with silk generally help with drier skin and blurring pores/fine lines. Blur might also work. Dry skin is tricky....I definitely recommend samples.

As for the peach or yellow....for me peach works better, but I also have to wear a cream under. I think again, it would be a sampling situation to see which works best if you wanted to try them.

I am still a newbie as far as the Ultimate Luxury Powder.....I think it is more of a treatment, but it can be used as a primer.....it might be too white to use as a finisher, and I would think you would want it close to your skin.

You may find that the original formula works just fine for foundation. It's not matte-matte (I've got nearly 10 years on you, and while I look a lot younger too, I do try to avoid both cakiness and radioactivity). It's a light coverage, just evens out your skintone, and blurs any imperfections.

Definitely try one or two of the perfecting powders - I'm pale and cool-toned and use either Date Bait or the original translucent. Just a hint of colour and polish, and again - no radioactivity or cakiness. Bonus: If you're in a rush and you just need a bit of colour and blurring, dust on some Date Bait (or whichever your colour is) and you're good to go. I was shocked, but there's really no dustiness, settling into fine lines, pores appearing where you couldn't see them before, too shiny, or all those things I'd come to associate with finishing powders.

A sample of the glow foundation might not be a bad idea, but I haven't needed it. Can't help you with SIAJ, wish I could. The original is sheerer, but on me, any undereye concealer seems doomed to accentuate lines (I remember learning HOW to do that in stage makeup classes ages ago, but now the process just seems to happen naturally - ow! - really not the effect I'm going for). But try both the original and the peach in sample size - maybe mix it with just a dot of hydrating serum or moisturiser?

Also - if you can, try the DMAE and Super Serum. They're both wonderful for skin care. On a budget, I'd opt for the DMAE, but when I can, I use Super Serum in the morning and DMAE at night - also makes a huge difference.

And don't forget the Holy Crow! Even though it's an insta-wrinkle thing, it does a pretty good job of under-eye hydration...hmmm...would mixing a dot of SIAJ in with that do it, I wonder?

Cheers -

I cannot agree more about date bait. I haven't yet found a powder foundation that I can wear, however I do plan on trying SN's original forumula when my liquid foundation runs out. Everything I have tried sinks into my lines and pores and also fades or clumps, by the middle of the day with powders I look blotchy and bleh. BUT! And a Big Butt, Date Bait never does any of that and I can't seem to put too much on. So like this morning I took a big fluffy brush, smushed it into my soon-to-be-used-up sample and dusted it all over my face. No cakiness, no powderiness, just a blurred, sorta glowy, healthy looking finish. I mean I have pores, I have lines, nothing it going to magically make them go away, but this stuff gives me a nice work-ready finish. So I'm happy :)

Hi JannyGirl, Welcome to the Forum. I'm 53 and I usually use a mix of the medium coverage and the glow foundation. I don't have problems with accenting pore, lines, etc. I do use both the Super Serum and the Oatmeal hydrating serum along with a good moistureizer before I apply foundation, I use all of the finishing powders, and agree with everyone who says that you can get by with just using Dait bait alone for a fast easy day. I'm am not any help with SIAJ either, like Rhys, no matter what color I use it does accent those fine lines that I have around my eyes. I use the Ulitmate powder as a primer after I have used the other products and before I apply my foundation. My skin just feels so smooth when I use it.
I to get told all the time that I look younger than my age, and while my skin isn't as dry as Rhys, it is dry. Hope this helps.

Thanks so much, ladies for all your replies; they were a great help! :)

Silverfern - I have found the same to be true with any under-eye powder concealer. We sure don't want to accentuate lines!

JenW - I am thinking the silk in the products will be a great help with dry skin issues. I'm not desert dry, but dry nonetheless.

Rhys - "I do try to avoid both cakiness and radioactivity" -- LOL! Agreed! Your comments were very helpful! I have put Date Bait on my wish list for my next order and will sample the perfecting powders. I passed on samples of SIAJ for this order, but may try it next time. And, I will take a look at the skin care products you mentioned.

tizzylou - Glad to hear the Ulitmate powder works well for you -- I ordered a sample! :)

I can't tell you how encouraging and helpful it was to have this feedback. Thanks to each of you for taking the time to post. :D

Here's what I ordered; I am so excited (and already working on my wish list for next order):

Sample *Kit* Original Coverage Ivory
Sample Medium Coverage Ivory *Only*
Sample Ebony foundation *Only*
Sample Glow Foundation Base
Sample Ultimate Luxury Treatment Powder
Pure- clear Black Label Lippie
Plain Lip Balm
Long Handled Baby Kabuki Brush

My order has already shipped! :D
