Can you give me a makeover? ^_^

Post by Jessica » Tue Nov 17, 2009 10:44 am

Hi everybody! I am a make-up noob.. I'm scared of wearing make-up because I never really do (I've spent most of my life just wearing chapstick on my lips when going out lol) and I have noo oidea what colours suit me :( So I was wondering if you could help by giving me a makeover! ^^ I will post pictures of myself.. please note they are not recent because I cannot take a recent picture - the weather here atm is always downcast so by 3pm everything has a tint of blue (and of course will change the overall colour of my face)
Also, do you know what I could mix to achieve my SN foundation? I am Everyday Minerals Buff Light Neutral (EM Winged Butter IS FAR TOO YELLOW) Shiseido O20, and according to this website, NC25? http://www.editgrid.com/user/apbunz/meg ... tion_chart

Image Not wearing make-up, just eyeliner and mascara.

Image

Image Again, no make-up, as you can see I am pretty pale! (But I embrace it)LEFT

So eyeshadow, eyeliner, blush, lipstick.. whatever! :) Thank you very much! ALSO I have a question... I see lots of 'finishing/loose powders' and I have no knowledge of how to use them. I see that most are actually tinted - are they strong tints? Because I'm quite pale and use quite a light colour, I'm worried these loose powders would change the overall shade of my face, and the 'Finishing Dust' looks a bit orange! I mean there's SO MANY over-lapping powders.. and when I apply my mineral make-up base, it accentuates flakes on the area between my eyebrows and a little down from that. Do primers -really- work?

Additional Notes: I have no crease in my eye so I can't get away with make-up girls with double lids have. My eyes are kinda big and push my eyelids forward so they look like big fat eyelids! My lip colour most days are natural light/pale pinky-brown.

I'll start. I don't own much silk naturals yet, but I think a light shimmery eye shadow like Nekkid would be very pretty on you. And a little brown eye liner. In that order, I would also throw in a light matte blush, my current favorite is Petal. I am pale and it doesn't seem like I can put on too much Petal, so that's safe. You can get a sample. For lips I would go sort of pinkish. I'm not sure which one though. Damsel looks scary but I heard it's very light or sheer so it just gives a little color.

How is that for a start? :) Be brave!

First, foundation.
Since
Winged Butter is too yellow, I am going to suggest Warm Gold. Probably about 1 scoop color: 9 Ivory (plus maybe a few more). I think NC20 is around a 1:12.

Finishing Powder: I am paler than you and I have no issue with the tinted finishing powders being too dark for me except Love Lure and Pristine. I think you ought to sample Tempt Tryst. If you are looking for a simpler finisher, try Perfecting Powder. They are usually the last step in putting on mineral makeup to set your makeup.

Then we get into color products....are you more a neutral color person, or do you like brighter colors? I will recommend the others based on what you like. I generally assume that if you have not worn makeup much that you like a natural look, but I could be wrong.

Jen's advice is always good. I wanted to add that (with a tan) I am a 1:11 mix and Love Lure is too dark for me, if that helps at all. I do own some, but I mix it with untinted powder to get the desired shade. Date Bait is not dark at all, and can be worn by those with fair skin. Tempt Tryst is somewhere in the middle. The perfecting glows Splendid and Crystal are nice for fair skin, too.

Sounds fun! Thanks for the advice so far.

Jen, I don't mind for colours really. The reason why I haven't worn make-up is besucase I am extremely insecure and thus never experimented with make-up enough to brave and wear. I've been becoming more interested in the love of pretty, gorgeous lipsticks and eyeshadows, but I have no idea what colours would suit me.. I like either neutral or colourful colour. But to make the suggestions/recs search smaller for you, do you know what colours would be good for an 'everyday look' or a 'slight spice-up' look?

hi jessica,
for someone starting out in makeup, i would suggest going with the colors that i find easy to apply. many of the "original' blushes are less heavily pigmented, and so are easy to wear...i'd recommend climax, flirt, poppy, embrace, lady, or petal.

as for eyeshadows, there are so many and in my opinion, almost any of these shadows can be worn as a one color wash, as long as it isn't too dark or too light (although if you're going for a smoky eye, dark works, and i've worn highlighter shades alone before as well). in addition to all the shadows under the "one color wash" page, most of the neutrals, morphing colors, and satin shimmers make great one color eye looks. also several of the new mixed metals palette (under new products or vegan eyeshadows). my opinion would be to not only try to pick colors you think would look nice on you, but also colors that you just like. if you want some nice colored shadows that aren't too over the top, i think that the MUSE palette that Karen cloned earlier this year are all so pretty---see Jen's swatches of them here (under Spring 2009 eyeshadows).

as for lip gloss to start out with--any of the black labels, tender, breathless, maiden, gold blush, peace, pout, or precious.

i love the original white perfecting powder. love lure is too dark for me as well, and date bait too pink. i like the original so much that i haven't tried tempt tryst, but it would likely be the best tinted one for someone of your complexion. the perfecting powder is the best powder primer i have found for blurring pores and fine lines. you can wear it alone and it looks nice even without foundation. if you find you have flakies between your eyebrows (i get those too!) make sure you are really moisturizing well (try some of karen's gelled moisturizers and the rose, oatmeal, or green tea and aloe serums) and exfoliate a little bit (microdermabrasion cream and bha or aha toner).

you are going to have soo much fun playing with all of your new makeup ;)

All of packgals's recommendations are good. I am going to try to narrow her recommendations a bit for you. Also, I am going to keep it kind of on the simple side......

For your spice up look: Climax Blush...or maybe Stardust, Precious lippie, Pop as a one color wash, and Vogue as a liner

For your everyday look: Flirt Blush, Maiden lippie, Purr as a one color wash, and the same liner.

The only other thing you might want is a highlight eyeshadow color. I recommend Sprite.

Thank you so, so, very much for your replies, recs/suggestions and help :) And packgal you're right - I think I will have fun applying these!

By the way, with that eyeliner, do you apply on the waterline? I usually apply eyeliner there but it's powdery and a little afraid I'd flick tiny particles of it in my eye?

I really don't recommed applying anything on your waterline.......it should go as close to below your lashes as you can get it.
