I do offsite hosting for pictures on flickr. There is a tab where you can get a URL for different sizes of a pic for each pic hosted there. flickr is free for the first 100 pics, and I can walk you through it. I probably should figure out a few more offsight pic databases like photobucket, imageshack. I often resize there and save to my computer.
We also have the capability to upload directly from your computer. I also need to look into this a little more and put together a little tutorial. You will need photo software that allows you to resize the pic.

Yayyy!
I think we all have the potential to surprise ourselves quite often, if we are willing to try. That is why they say, 'Necessity is the mother of invention'.

I use a free photoshop-like program to resize pictures, it might help for this. It's called GIMP.
http://www.gimp.org/
When you open an image you can do stuff like select an area and crop it and also resize the image to a certain amount of pixels. To find out the avatar size for this board I right clicked on and saved someone elses, then opened it in the GIMP or looked at it's properties in your operating system's file browser. I plugin in those numbers into the GIMP's resizing thingie and my image shrinks.
Ok i'm a computer nerd
